    MAC Viva Glam Lipstick

    High-maintenance but gorgeous and glam

I went to MAC determined to walk away with a red lipstick that would actually look good on me. I have very fair, freckled skin and red hair. Every red I've ever tried has looked ugly and orange-y. The first lipstick the salesperson suggested was VGI, and it looked great on me. It's a true red and it really lights up my blue eyes. I like the texture, but I need to exfoliate and moisturize my lips and apply lip liner before I use this product, otherwise it feathers, dries out my lips, and quickly fades. I think it's worth it for the color payoff, but make sure you have a mirror on you at all times when you wear this product!

    Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss

    Another reason to love Clinique

I purchased this gloss in Currant, a sheer jewel-toned berry that lasts for hours and maintains its vinyl-like shine. It moisturizes my lips so they look all-around fabulous until its time to reapply. My only sadness is that aside from Currant, I wasn't too keen on any of the other colors, and wish Clinique would come out with more. Until then, Currant will always be a staple in my makeup bag.

  • Nars Single Eye Shadow

    Nars Single Eye Shadow

    Almost perfect

Except for the price tag, my only gripe with Nars's eyeshadow is that crumbles when you touch it with a brush. I bought a more high-end eyeshadow brush to combat this, and it still did this [shrug]. I suppose I'm so obsessive about preserving this shadow because it's amazing. The colors are gorgeous, go on silky smooth, and last all day. They don't migrate, even to the corners of my eyes and down my cheeks like so many other brands. Viva la Nars!

  • Garnier Fructis Fortifying Deep Conditioner

This conditioner smells delicious. Although it leaves my hair feeling silky smooth, oddly, it doesn't make my hair look any different and the silky feel goes away after a day or two. My mom said the citrus oils this product contains dried her hair out.

  • Bumble and bumble Alojoba Conditioner

    Bumble and bumble Alojoba Conditioner

    Turned my hair into straw

This pricey conditioner performed about as well as a bar of soap. It left my hair drier and frizzier than it already was. The watery formula was difficult to distribute through my (fine) hair.

  • Maybelline New York Full 'N Soft Washable Mascara

I resolved to stop using department store mascaras because of a) the free-falling economy and b) mascaras dry out so quickly that it's not worth the extra bucks. I'm glad I switched, because this unassuming drugstore gem blows its pricier counterparts out of the water. The black perfectly frames my baby blues with long, full, glossy lashes that look so natural you'd think I was born with them. The clump-free formula is very wet, so the product goes on smoothly and I can expect it to have a long life span. The feathery brush resists build-up and contributes to the mascara's flawless execution.

  • Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer

    Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer

Great bottle, great color, high shine

I was really happy with this nail polish. The dark cherry shade I picked out (I forget the actual name) went on shiny and very close to the color in the bottle. If you get a lot of polish on the end of the brush before applying it, it won't go on thin and streaky. Bonus points to Sally Hansen for being the company to finally create a grooved rubber top for easy opening.

  • Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets

Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets

There are better blotters out there

Clean & Clear is correct in declaring that these won't smudge makeup. Although they do a decent job of sopping up excess oil, my face still looks shiny after each use. When I use better blotting papers (Palladio is my favorite), I notice they pick up more oil than these do and leave my face matte. I also don't like that these don't pick up sweat the way other blotters do. And finally, the packaging is flimsy, so it'll fall apart in your purse. It can also be annoying to open and close: when it opens, sometimes a few sheets come out, and it can require more dexterity than I possess to get the little tab back in the little slot.

  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45

I hate sunscreen. I hate the way it smells, feels, clogs my pores, and makes everything stick to me. Too bad for me, I'm a freckled, fair-skinned, blue-eyed red-head, so sunscreen is a must if I don't want to die from fifty different skin cancers before I'm thirty. This is the only suncreen I've found that I can tolerate. It goes on dry and absorbs immediately. It still smells like sunscreen, but it's very subtle.

  • Stila #26 Perfecting Concealer Brush

I was so excited to find this brush for $7.00 at Nordstrom Rack, but when I used it for the first time, I regretted having essentially flushed $7.00 down the toilet. While I give this brush credit for it's size and shape, the actual bristles are awful. The product stuck to the brush, making applying and blending tricky, if not impossible. I ended up abandoning the brush and finishing the job with my fingers.
