  • Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara

Mascara, like hair care, is a very personal thing. What works best for my eyelashes may not work best for others. My lashes tend to be very short and right in the center of my lashes they tend to "turn down" and be more straight than the lashes in either corner. It is so exasperating! I use a eyelash curler and I see some difference, but I am very particular about my mascara. If it can make my straight, short lashes look glam, I am sold! The pros on this mascara is the crazy long brush; it is cone shaped with the brush extending all the way to the tip, versus the wands that stop short of the tip and leave the tip with a piece of solid plastic. It leaves my lashes more defined and a taaad bit longer, but not all that impressive. I experienced some smudging and a bit of flaking towards the end of the day, and when I look at my lashes head on, they don't stick out in any way other than the definition. I also don't usually spend money on mascaras; I find too many drugstore mascaras that are just so good, that this one I can definitely pass on.

  • Jordana Cosmetics Blush

This blush seems to have a cult like following, but I just couldn't see it as a HG blush. The packaging that is on the TB website picture is actually MUCH nicer than the packaging that my blush was in; mine was a clear tin with gold trim, and a gaudy "Jordana - Made in the USA" gold "tag" going across the top of the blush. I know that I shouldn't be so picky about packaging, after all, if it works, it works, right? However, packaging IS important. Consumers will notoriously pick one product over another just based on the packaging. I am a definite drugstore junkie and am all about saving my money, but there are other blushes in this price range that perform just as well with a better packaging design. I actually REALLY like the picture on the TB website, but I have never seen the packaging that way so I can't really say. The blush itself is okay; it's a little powdery and the pigmentation is mediocre - I have seen better in that area, but it isn't a bad little blush for under $3. You just may have to build it up a bit to get the product to really show. If packaging is not a concern for you, I would definitely give it a try! It's not up there with WNW or ELF, but it is a decent option for the price.

  • E.L.F. Studio Eyelash Curlers

This is by far the worst eyelash curler I have ever tried! The only reason I gave it a 2 is due to the construction of the product; it is well constructed, just wish it worked as well. :( The "scoop" portion is much too small for my eyes; it is actually the smallest I have ever seen. It probably covers 3/4 of my eye area and it PINCHES, pinches so bad. The design is just horrible. It went immediately into the trash. Back to my Tweezerman, which was fine the way it was! :) Next time I will remember that if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

UPDATE: Mineral Glow, Lavender and Clear

UPDATE 1/1/15: I recently tried the Mineral Glow and Lavendar colors, which turned out much better than the clear, which was my original review. The Mineral Glow was too glittery IMO and I would not repurchase; however, the texture was worlds better than the clear so that is a plus! The Lavender was actualy really decent! I don't think that the color actually leads to a "brightening" effect (which is also why I didn't try the green as I thought it would be ineffective in that regard) but the texture, like the Mineral Goal, was WORLDS better! I would actually repurchase the Lavender again. It was smoothing and did minimize imperfections. I originally rated the Clear as a "4", but adding the Mineral Glow and Lavender, I would overall give it a "7!" I would definitely recommend this primer. I was a bit disappointed with the Mineral Glow as I expected it to be more "luminous" but it was definitely more glittery with a larger particle size and I just couldn't wear it, not even for the summer, so that was a no go. As a side note, Revlon makes a really good luminous face product in the Photo Ready line and it is super workable to add to foundation and it gives a very subtle and natural luminosity. Here is the original review on the Clear:..................... The texture of the clear was clumpy; it reminded me of the silicone gel used in implants. Because it sticks together in clumps so badly, the pump really doesn't work. It just gets clogged so I had to take it off to get the product out. It is a bit on the oilier side, but I did not experience oilier skin or breakouts. However, I really didn't experience anything with this product. It didn't make my makeup last longer, look better, minimize oil, pores or redness... I didn't experience any change. I would not repurchase again.

  • Sonia Kashuk Perfecting Luminous Foundation

I purchased this in the color "Cream" which is an exact match for me. My skin is combo/dry in the Winter so I wanted to purchase a foundation that had a bit more moisture in it for the seasonal months. I have also been using Clinique's Perfectly Real for the season also, and they are similar IMO but this one is much more budget friendly at about half the cost, so that is a good thing! I was originally going to give this foundation a 7 but changed my mind; anytime you buy foundation that states "luminous" you know you are getting a more moisturizing formula so when my t-zone is oily at around 5 hours later, which still isn't bad, I really should expect it. If you have oilier skin, definitely use a setting powder with it and carry some blotting sheets as you won't get any oil control with this foundation. I would also suggest using a trusted oil control powder and just lightly brushing over the t-zone area after application and you should be fine. I love the "skin-like" appearance and the coverage can go from very sheer (with a damp beauty blender) to light (with fingers) to medium (with a dry flat top kabuki brush). This makes it incredibly versatile; I have even started wearing it on my "no make-up days!" and no one knows. I am not crazy about the packaging, but I am seeing more and more foundations as of late that have a pump but are shaped like a squeeze tube. I would actually prefer just a standard pump or a standard squeeze tube, and what is a bit frustrating about this packaging is that even though it is shaped like a squeeze tube, the plastic is hard and can't be squeezed; it's like they couldn't decide which packaging style to go with so they picked both. I am very picky about packaging, but don't let that deter you; this is a really good option for people with normal to dry skin (if skin is really dry, you may need to experiment with a good primer or serum underneath), or combo skin with a really good setting powder. If you have oily skin, you may see a "breakdown" of the product in the T-Zone area and particularly around the nose.

  • Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof Mascara

I purchased both the Waterproof and regular versions and the review is almost the same. However, I did take an additional star off for the Waterproof formula as I did experience the same challenges as with the regular formula (except a little less flaking, but still smudging which shouldn't happen with a Waterproof formula).I recently came across a review for this product from one of my favorite and trusted beauty bloggers. This lesson has definitely reminded me that what works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. :( First, the positives. Pretty, feathery, defined lashes. Very natural looking, so if you are looking for vampy volume, I would pass on this mascara. The brush is small but in a good way! It is easy to get all of the lashes with this brush. I came across a WNW mascara that I was loving for the "natural" look but this one was so highly rated that I wanted to give it a try, too! I did experience some minor clumping even though the product states no globs or clumps, but the biggest issue for me was smudging under my lower lash line. I applied 2 coats to the top and 1 to the bottom; within 5-7 hours, there were smudges under my eyes. If anyone has any tips to prevent that, please let me know! (I had concealer under my eyes and a light dusting of setting powder.) I tried it on both the upper and lower lashes, but purchased it specifically for the lower lashline and found that I really didn't like it on either lashline. (The mini brush is super tiny and makes it so easy to get in the lower lashline.) The reviews are so overwhelmingly positive, that I would still give it a try as it might work for you! Maybe purchase from a store that allows returns even after trying, such as Ulta. Unfortunately, neither formula worked for me and I will not be repurchasing.

  • Nutra Nail Speed Dry 30 Second Top Coat

When I first purchased this, the product worked really well - I would say it was more like an 8. However, after only having for a few months, the formula really thickened up to the point of not being able to use the product. It was creating these almost fabric, plastic-y strings. The last time I used it, I was getting these fine strings all over my fingers. I had to pick them off of my fingers and my nails. It was the strangest thing - for that reason, I will go back to my HG Sally Hansen.

  • E.L.F. Nail Polish
    4.0

    E.L.F. Nail Polish

    Inconsistent Formula

Yes, this product is only $2 (I believe it used to be a $1 according to some of the other reviewers), but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't perform. I have never spent more than $3 on a polish, and compared to other brands in the same price range as ELF, it's pretty disappointing which is so sad for me because I LOVE ELF products; I do hauls a few times a year and they have some really good, if not great, products. This one is just mediocre. I purchased several of the kits and also the individual polishes. In my experience, the individual polishes worked best as far as the formula is concerned. Some of the polishes are streaky and thick and others chip within 2 days; I have never seen such fast chips on my nails before. I normally don't use a base coat, just two coats of polish then the top coat, but with this product I tried it all ways - with just the polish alone, a base coat and /or top coat. On my fingers, it is always about 7 days before I have any chips. If I don't apply a top coat right at the time I polish my nails, I do a few days later to extend my manicure longer, but still have not had any chips within two days. I have used WNW, Pure Ice, NYC Color and Sinful Colors and haven't experienced any streaking, thickness or premature chipping. Yes, it IS only $2, but why not stick with something that is $2 and DOESN'T chip or streak? Just because a product is low cost doesn't mean we shouldn't expect it to perform. On the plus side, there are lots of colors to choose from so if you are okay with changing your polish often, this may not be such a bad deal for you. Some of their nude colors are a bit off - for example, Nude is too peachy to match most skin tones and Innocent is too pinky to match most tones. However, the reds, corals, burgundies etc. are all fun to play with! I wouldn't discount it all together; just keep the old adage in mind, "you get what you pay for!"
