    Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

I found the plant extracts to be irritating

I love that this product is the most gentle (in terms of abrasiveness) physical exfoliant I've ever used on my sensitive skin. It leaves my skin smooth without being overly harsh--except for all the plant extracts, some of which irritate both my nasal allergies and my skin. If I could find a similar product without the plant extracts, I would consider purchasing, but I won't buy this product again. Ingredients: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Talc, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Colloidal Oatmeal, Rice Bran, Rice Starch, PCA, Allyl Methacrylates Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Limonene, Methylparaben, Titanium Dioxide, Allantoin, Salicylic Acid, Grapefruit Peel Oil, Papain, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Cyclodextrin, Melaleuca, Tea Tree Leaf Oil.

    Clinique Colour Surge Lipstick

    Too opaque for my preference

I've tried this lipstick in a couple of shades--Extreme Pink and Rose Spectrum. Both colors were too dark and opaque for my taste, and they made my lips look middle-aged. I much prefer the Butter Shine lipsticks. Ingredients: pentaerythrityl tetraisostearate, di-ppg-3-myristyl ether adipate, bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2, microcrystalline wax, ozokerite, barium sulfate, synthetic wax, castor/ipdi copolymer, polyethylene, coffee seed extract, ascorbyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate, lauryl pca, lecithin, castor seed oil, alumina, bht. May contain: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, red 7 lake, yellow 5 lake, red 6 lake, blue 1 lake, yellow 6 lake, red 28 lake, red 33 lake, carmine, red 30 lake, red 22 lake.

    Wella Energy Styler Volumizing Mousse

    There are better mousses

I received this product for free from a salon after a stylist gave me a bad haircut (I found a new stylist and a new salon after that). It's definitely not my favorite way to receive free products, but at least the salon gave me some compensation for my hair trauma! Anyway, this mousse comes in a very tall can that is completely useless for travel and even awkward on my vanity at home (and it's too tall to fit in my medicine cabinet). The one thing I love about the packaging is the dispensing mechanism, which I find easier to use than your usual mousse nozzle. As for the product, it claims to be strong hold, but fortunately for me, it has only a light hold (which is all I need). It's alcohol-free, which is great for my highlights, but sometimes it seems a little too heavy for my fine hair. I also hate the fragrance, which reminds me a little of men's cologne. Overall, this just doesn't come close other cheaper mousses I've tried. I finished the can I had, but this isn't a product I'll purchase. Ingredients: water, hydrofluorocarbon 152a, propane, butane, polyquaternium-11, laureth-4, peg-25 paba, panthenol, cetrimonium chloride, fragrance.

  • Bobbi Brown Blush

    Bobbi Brown Blush

    Nice blush but pricey

he blush is richly pigmented, so a little goes a long way on my very fair skin, and in fact, it's very easy for me to over apply it. Fortunately, the formula applies smoothly and blends well. I took off one lippy because I find the staying power to be average (it's not any worse or any better than other blushes I have used from Maybelline, Mary Kay, and Elizabeth Arden). I'll probably look at other blushes when I need to purchase one again. Ingredients: Talc, Silica, Zinc Stearate, Peg-150 Distearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Tricaprylin, Polyethylene, Laureth-4, Lanolin, Beeswax, Methylparaben, Propylparaben. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Manganese Violet, Bismuth Oxychloride, Iron Oxides, Red 7 Lake, Mica, Ultramarines, Blue 1 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Carmine, Red 28 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Red 6 Lake.

Clarins Par Amour Toujours Eau de Toilette

An okay fragrance but not a favorite

This is a fruity floral fragrance. In my opinion, it is okay. The fragrance notes include rose, peppercorn, blackcurrant buds, pink grapefruit, raspberry. I find the grapefruit note to be a little stronger than I prefer. I would wear this if I received it as a gift, but I wouldn't purchase it myself.

    Lancome Primordiale Optimum Eye

    I wasn't impressed

This eye treatment is a lightweight moisturizer that absorbs quickly, but it is so highly fragranced that it sometimes irritates my eyes. It also doesn't have very many antioxidants, so I think it's very overpriced. I definitely won't be purchasing this. Ingredients: water, cyclopentasiloxane, glycerin, dimethicone, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, acrylamide/sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer, honey, apricot kernel oil, butylene glycol, yellow 5, red 40, tocopherol, phenoxyethanol, caffeine, fagus sylvatica extract, algae extract, imidazolidinyl urea, triethanolamine, asiatic acid, polysorbate 80, polycaprolactone, sunflower seed extract, dimethiconol, linalool, isohexadecane, acrylates/c10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, fragrance, methylparaben, butylphenyl methylpropional, soybean oil.

Dove go Fresh Cool Moisture Body Lotion

I found the fragrance to be overpowering and irritating

I bought this lotion because it has lots of antioxidants, because it was recommended by Paula Begoun and because it was so much cheaper than my usual lotion, Paula's Choice Slip into Silk Body Lotion. It absorbs quickly and moisturizes well, but alas, I think the fragrance (which I don't really like, by the way) irritates my skin, which can be sensitive to fragrances from time to time. If Dove would just start making a fragrance-free lotion with their 24hr Nutri-Serum, I would give up my expensive Slip into Silk habit. Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Glycol Stearate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Petrolatum, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate), Cucumber Fruit Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Saccharomyces/Zinc Ferment, Saccharomyces/Magnesium Ferment, Linoleic Acid, Sunflower Seed Oil, Cholesterol, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6 II, Ceramide 1, Sodium PCA, Phytosphingosine, Sodium Acrylate/Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearamide AMP, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Green 5, Titanium Dioxide, Yellow 5.

Sonia Kashuk Kashuk Tools Blusher Brush

Cheap but I prefer Paula's Choice brushes

I bought this brush for about US$10 several years ago. It's certainly better than those little brushes that usually come in blush compacts. It's pretty soft, and it applies blush fairly well, and it doesn't shed. However, I eventually replaced it with a Paula's Choice blush brush because I find the quality of the PC brushes to be higher, since they're softer and better shaped.

    MAC Paint

    Good cream shadows

I have two shades of MAC Paint--Bare Canvas and Chiaroscuro. I originally bought them to use as eye shadow primers before I discovered the wonder that is Urban Decay Primer Potion. Now I use MAC Paint over UDPP as a cream shadow. But I don't use it often, and I don't expect to repurchase, since I really prefer powder shadows to cream ones. Ingredients: isododecane, cyclopentasiloxane, isohexadecane, disteardimonium hectorite, alcohol, steareth-5 stearate, hydrogenated vegetable oil, beeswax, silica, tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate, acrylates copolymer, propylene carbonate, methylparaben, propylparaben. May contain: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, bismuth oxychloride, carmine, chromium hydroxide green, chromium oxide greens, ferric ferrocyanide, manganese violet, ultramarines, blue 1 lake, yellow 5 lake.

  • M.A.C. Fluidline

    M.A.C. Fluidline

    Currently my favorite eyeliners

When I first purchased this product, I had to practice a bit before I perfected the application. It still takes me longer to apply this than to apply a pencil liner, but I much prefer the end result of the Fluidline. My only complaint is that the liner always disappears by the end of the day on the outer corners of my eyes. I'm not sure if this a result of rubbing my eyes or just my oily eyelids. However, I don't find that pencil liners last any better, so this complaint isn't a deal breaker for me. These are currently my favorite eyeliners, but I wish they had more neutral, matte shades, a la Bobbi Brown. For this reason, I'm going to try the BB next. Ingredients: isododecane, cyclopentasiloxane, polyehtylene, trimethylsiloxysilicate, disteardimonium hectorite, propylene carbonate, tocopheryl acetate, retinyl palmitate, lecithin, caprylyl glycol, triethoxycaprylylsilane, hydrogenated polyisobutene, phenyl trimethicone, ceramide 2, hexylene glycol, barium sulfate, bht, phenoxyethanol. May contain: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, carmine, chromium hydroxide green, chromium oxide greens, ultramarines, blue 1 lake.
