  • BareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

Just because something is labeled mineral makeup, does not always mean it's universally skin friendly for everyone. First of all, I give BareMinerals credit for the range of colors they have came out with. I see their efforts in accommodation those both in the cool, warm, neutral, and olive spectrum. Though not perfect, there definitely are some close choices. Unfortunately, I did not find a perfect match but there were some that were close enough that I thought with either a bit of bronzer or highlighter, I could make it work. Here is my story as to why I decided it would not. I love the concept of loose powder foundation. The finer milled, the better. For oily skinned gals, this seems like a solution. However, for me, it was more like a challenge. Because of its composition, it oxidizes. I recommended wearing this for a good couple of hours to see if the shade remains true. I have yet to find a perfect match but that probably will not happen because I have decided this is not for me. If you read the ingredients, one of them is Bismuth Oxychloride. This gives a lot of mineral products a nice glowy sheen. Trust me, I love that it does that. I hate what it does to my skin, however. In hours, I noticed my cheeks starting to itch and slightly turning red. I could also start feeling this around my nose. I wasn't sure if it was this but after a couple of weeks and blemishes later, I was convinced. I gave up on it and took extra care of my skin the next couple weeks, noticing that it started to clear up again. The downside to loose powder foundations is that they are barely travel friendly. They can get all over the place and possibly stain clothing. The coverage was also mediocre. I felt putting more on felt heavy and just unnatural.

  • bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer

I felt like I got a good value out of this bottle. For starters, it comes in a pump which I like better than the twist top or lid style primers. It makes it more efficient. The formula is quite basic. Many other primers share similar ingredients. There was no offensive scent to drive me away. It fills in pores nicely and leaves almost like a powdery feel. A little bit goes a long way. I suggest a pea sized amount on your finger tips or flat foundation brush and stroke upwards where your pores are most obviously then downward in the opposite direction. I always feel that dimethicone based primers do well with powder foundations so that they do not look so blotchy. This also contains aloe and chamomile extract so it is more friendlier than some of the alternatives out the in market. I do recommend this. The only gripe I have is that even with combination skin, I feel that less of this is more. Too much can definitely cause the skin to look greasy and more blotting will be needed throughout the day.

  • BareMinerals BareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation

The foundation claims to be a brightening serum and makeup in one. This is really running and it can separate so my most important tip is to shake it really well before putting a few drops on the back of your hand or a clean palette before dabbing your brush or tool of choice into it. I highly recommend a more denser brush rather than the stippling style because of the sheer formula, it can take more time to blend and can lead coverage to be streaky if the fibers are more separated. This explains why they did come out with a brush especially for this formula but I did not bother. I used a big fluffy dense brush and it worked just as well. Application was quite effortless as this is definitely better done with a sheerer look. Too many layers or applications of this can look very opaque and unflattering. I love that it is lightweight and hardly feels like any makeup is on my face. To know that serum is in it is a plus but here is why I felt it was not going to last too long on my go to list. This does not provide a buildable coverage for me, especially during my oilier days. It transfers - EASILY. I have tried it with a primer, but there was just something about wearing a serum over a primer that did not sit well with me. I felt like I was not getting the maximum benefit of the product. The finish is satin to dewy, especially if you are already moisturized. I was impressed with the color range especially with my deep yellow tone. However, after three hours of wear, I found that much of it was gone. I even tried carrying a blotting powder and felt it wasn't enough to keep everything fresh looking. It's great for quick out the door and back trips, but for the price, I feel like there is better out there. This formula needs some reworking to make it more universal.

  • L'Oreal Paris Visible Lift Blur Foundation

I love L'Oreal products so I decided one day to pick this up for my mother who was in need of a new foundation. Upon reading the claims to provide a more even and radiant look, I decided to purchase. First, I am an NC37-NC42 in MAC depending on the season. W6 Sun Beige was a close match although I believe it could have used more yellow to get a more dimensional look. I felt like the shade and foundation made me look somewhat washed out.

  • Bare Escentuals Matte SPF 15 Foundation

I surely wasn't impressed. The coverage was buildable, but the colors were somewhat flat. Not only were they not very dimensional, but they seem to oxidize quite a bit. What may have looked good on my skin to begin with had turned either muddy or orange in just a few short hours. It did not stay on well either. I will say that it does blend well but that is the same to say with many loose powders. No pizzazz here.

  • NYX Cosmetics Mineral Matte Finishing Powder

These were quite undetectable which is great. There are different shades, not several but a few. So if you need a sheer layer of coverage or just a very minor touch up, it may help to just use this as a finisher after blotting. It didn't do much for oil control but the counter reason to this is that is that if you are aiming for a satin or dewy look, a light pat of a brush with this on the tip can help preserve it. It doesn't make someone's makeup look more opaque or cakey.

  • L'Oreal Paris True Match Naturale Mineral Foundation
    4.0

L'Oreal Paris True Match Naturale Mineral Foundation

    Difficult, Dreadful, and Doubtful

While sifting through all the shades isn't difficult enough, at eight to thirteen dollars, this can be a drag to shop for. However, I managed to find a shade close to my skintone but left me rolling my eyes as another mineral formula failed to impress me. One positive aspect is that it does have a more matte finish and yellow undertones compared to a product line such as Maybelline Mineral Power but this was a chalked on mess. Not only was the brush included not useful, it was stiffer in the middle and looser on the outer hairs which left streaky uneven application all through out the face, how inconvenient. Now, I don't mean to sound like a snob to L'Oreal as they make some of the finest lines but this gave me a reason to doubt when the day wore on and found that the chalky mineral makeup foundation wasn't even on my face anymore but had been easily rubbed off. This is definitely better applied with a much larger kabuki brush but don't expect it to be your cosmetic staple anytime soon as you'll see your complexion either shiny in a couple hours or uneven from the application flaws.

  • Avalon Organics Vitamin C Refreshing Cleansing Gel

This is a decent cleanser, definitely not the best. While I do find because of the ingredients it makes it look like a great overall package, the breakdown is otherwise. First, I love the convenience of a pump. The amount of product you get for the price is nice as well. If you get this at CVS, Target, Walmart and other mass market stores, expect to pay anywhere between 7-12 bucks a bottle. The scent is of citrus fruit, one of my favorite aromas. So here is why my review title says "Caution!" - don't leave it on too long. I know some of us gals like to massage our faces with our face washes to ensure all the impurities are out but that is when it starts to overdry the skin. I definitely recommend adding a makeup wipe or cleanser separately before using this so that you can rinse it off right away without doubting your face is clean. I experienced peeling after my first couple uses because I had to learn the trick to making this work.

  • Avalon Organics Intense Defense with Vitamin C Renewal Cream

I keep this on my nightstand or my desk. It is definitely moisturizing. Yes, it does contain fruit oils. No, it has not broken me out even though I am acne prone. I find this to be a little more heavier than a regular cream because it can make me look greasy. But as a night cream, it gives me the right amount I need. It doesn't work well under makeup for me unless my skin is parched that day. When I have flaky patches of skin on my cheeks, this does quite well but I avoid day use because of the fruit acids in this to decrease any sensitivity I may have to sun exposure combined with usage. I do like the smell. Some say it reminds them of overripe oranges. I like that it does smell like oranges, period. I do not like the heavy perfumed creams so this is pleasant compared to some I have tried wondering how much fragrance was used in the substance. I like that it has 70% natural substance. I'm honestly not a heavy organic product endorser but the more natural, the better.
