    Real Techniques Core Collection

Multipurpose, High Quality Brushes - Must Buy!

I purchased this set primarily because I wanted to add a contouring brush to my beauty tool collection. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that not only are the brushes ultra-soft, but I love and frequently use the other brushes. I use the contour brush for, well, contouring; the flat foundation brush for applying light/thin foundation or tinted moisturizer; the detailer brush for applying concealer (and then blending with a finger); and the buffing brush to apply blush and bronzer and occasionally to blend everything out. I do believe that these brushes, with the exception of the foundation brush, are multipurpose and, as Sam & Nic Chapman say, "do the work for you" when putting on makeup, which is to say product is evenly distributed and blends effortlessly. What's more, the case-stand that comes with the brushes is fantastic! It is foldable one way for protecting brushes when traveling and another way to display the brushes on a flat surface, and there are extra elastic bands to hold more brushes. I am VERY happy I invested in this collection and am looking forward to future Real Techniques purchases.

  • Jordana Cosmetics Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara

I know of two YouTube channels that have recommended this $3 drugstore mascara so I figured something must be truly special about it. The formula is thick and packs a great double punch of volume and pigment, which makes it great for nighttime wear or if you want your lashes to be uber-noticeable. The brush doesn't get an even coating of mascara, so it's a bit of a strategy game to efficiently put the stuff on my lashes without getting large globs. The ends of my lashes also get little knobs or else look like they're curling back down to my lower lids at the tip (is this phenomenon the same as getting "spider legs"?) but if they really bother me I run a lash comb through or gently pinch n' pluck the tips off with my fingers. This may seem like too much effort on my part that should be on the mascara's, but it was so inexpensive I don't really mind.

    Wet n Wild Megalength Mascara

    Everyday/Base Layer Mascara

This mascara does an excellent job defining my lashes for less than $5. Its plastic spike-bristled brush and wet formula make it easy to swipe through lashes. I advise to first lightly run the brush through lashes to create a base, and then use tight zigzag motions starting at the lash base to build up product as desired; because the formula is so wet, it can apply in blobs. I have long lashes that are of medium thickness, and while I haven't noticed a noticeable difference in length or volume I do like that the color makes my lashes subtly more noticeable, like my-lashes-but-better. When I want more dramatic lashes, I use this under a thicker, volumizing mascara for definition. I also would recommend this as a mascara for makeup newbies because the result is so natural (I have dark lashes, however, so someone with light lashes may not find it so natural).

  • E.L.F. Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

I tried this on a whim when my other tinted moisturizer ran out; I own other ELF products and brushes and am happy with them. I got the shade Beige because the packaging said it was good for skin with yellow undertones. I think ELF needs to take another look at what beige looks like because this product is quite orange. Perhaps ELF thinks orange keeps my skin's yellows from make me look too sickly, but as a result the shade does not match my skin. Some days it looks less like a tinted moisturizer mask, but those days are scattered among the days that I hope no one takes a good long look at my face. What's more, the smell isn't very pleasant, like yogurt, and it gets very shiny on my already combination-oily skin. Inexpensive as it is, I am never buying this again.

  • Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation

After trying many foundations at the drugstore I decided to head to Sephora to get a higher-end product to give me medium to full coverage with oil control. I find there to be a wide enough range of shades so that finding one that matched my skin tone wasn't frustrating. I've applied this foundation with non-latex wedge sponges, a stippling brush, a foundation brush, and an imitation Beauty Blender, and I've found that the blender gives me the fullest coverage to cover up my acne. I put a setting powder over this foundation, and for the most part my face doesn't get overly oily (I don't expect any foundation to keep my face shine-free all day). Also, its chemistry and that of my skin doesn't result in the foundation turning orange or fading as the day goes on. I think I get my money's worth for this product, and I've already repurchased this once because I like it so much.

  • Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural

This color is like a muted, brownish red; it goes on a shade or so darker than my natural lip color and pairs well with my olive complexion. In the baby tube I got with my Sephora rewards birthday box, it's super easy to apply, and the fragrance is super mild and pleasant. While it's kind of hard to layer after eating or drinking, since it's a "natural" shade it's not as noticeable as a more brightly colored shade would. I definitely plan on purchasing the full-sized tube once this wee gift runs out.

  • L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Star Secrets Lipcolour

I purchased Jennifer's nude as I am olive-toned just like she is, and was expecting the color to be more "my lips but better" than it turned out to be. This could be because of slight differences in complexion, but the lipstick tends to wear into the little lines of my lips as the day progresses. The smell is also not really to my liking, and I'm not picky about lipstick fragrances or lack thereof.

  • L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Magic Lumi Highlighting Concealer

I have perpetual dark under-eyes and this highlighter does a good job of concealing the darkness and making me look as if I'm a college student who actually gets enough sleep every night. Since there are no sparkle particles to be found I also apply the Magic Lumi down my nose and on my Cupid's Bow for added faux light. I find its staying power something to be desired, however this is only in areas like above my lip where I tend to touch my face a lot throughout the day.

  • Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick

    Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick

    Timeless Lipstick

When shades popular at least half a century ago, like "Fire & Ice," are still flying off the shelves today, there's got to be some kind of magic in the little black and gold bullets. I got my hands on Fire & Ice after checking three different drugstores, and I now understand why so many want one--it's a flattering shade of red across all skin tones! Crème is the formula I automatically think of when I think of Super Lustrous, but there is also Matte (the popular shade & alleged MAC dupe in matte is Smoked Peach) and I think Pearl. The only crème I've had problems with is in the shade Black Cherry... The color does not go on unevenly, doesn't hold on the inner part of my lips, and how it look when freshly applied looks very different than when the "outer layer" has worn off. Still, I plan on purchasing more colors in the Super Lustrous Line, as well as stocking up on more Fire & Ice--that shade better not ever be discontinued, Revlon!!

  • NYX Cosmetics Extra Creamy Round Lipstick

Don't be fooled by its tiny tube into thinking it's shy in the pigment department. The moisturizing formula keeps lips soft without making the lipstick apply color in uneven patches. Both colors I have, Eros and Snow White, have stayed true all night, especially with some clear lip liner to make sure it doesn't start sneaking out the corners of my mouth. I'm not sure if this is only an occasional deal, but at CVS rewards members can get this lipstick for $2-$3, saving a dollar to put towards buying another tube! What's more, pull off the color indicator at the bottom of the tube, and you've got a little pot of extra lipstick in case you unexpectedly run out!
