For a mere $6.00 (and often less--these babies go on sale a lot) you get an eyeliner that doesn't need to be sharpened and has great color payoff. On hot days, I get a smooth line that glides on and last all day. On not-so-hot days, the pencil drags and the color crumbles throughout the day. Yeah, they need to be heated to work properly.

This is the best mascara I've ever used. I tried it at my mom's house and immediately went out and bought a bottle. One swipe of the "magic" wand gave me long, feathery, natural-looking lashes. The only way this product could be improved is if The Body Shop tweaked the package. The mascara builds up around the hole and gets crusty, making it hard to close the bottle all the way, which causes the product to dry out.

Essie polishes come in an array of beautiful colors, making it one of my favorite beauty products to shop for. Just be certain that you try each color before buying it. The formula is inconsistent, so while most colors provide a perfect coat, some (especially the whites) can be thin, look streaky, and take at least three coats to be opaque. Using a basecoat doesn't seem to alleviate this problem. And yeah, the much-touted Mademoiselle rocks.

Colour Juice lip glosses are low-rent Juicy Tubes. To their credit, L'Oreal offers these cheapies in an attractive array of colors that are pigmented enough to wear alone but still sheer enough to punch up any lipstick. I'm not sure how long-lasting they are because no sooner had I put this on than I was wiping it off. This gloss is thick and sticky, and to add insult to injury it has a sickly sweet smell. The packaging doesn't help matters. The goop comes out of a hole on the top of a dome-shaped applicator. Squeeze the tube and you've got a pile o' gloss on the dome--a shape as non-conducive to application to the lips (especially thin ones like mine) as you can get.

After seeing matte red lips everywhere, I got curious enough to purchase MAC Viva Glam I. I loved the color, but the lipstick didn't work well on my super dry lips. It was tough to apply properly and would wear off everywhere but the dead skin that I had never even noticed. Enter Bigelow Lip Buffer. Using this product is like getting a mini facial for your lips. And best of all, red lipstick now glides on and stays perfectly smooth. Yay!

The only response my super dry hair had to this product was to get even limper. So I tried it on my skin, where it felt sticky and didn't absorb. On the bright side, it smells fantastic. So rather than toss it, I kept the bottle in my fridge to spritz on myself during hot days. It felt nice and cooling.

Maybelline New York Expert Eyes 100% Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover
Awfully greasy for being "non-oily"
This product always leaves an oily residue behind, along with a lot of mascara on my lashes and around my eyes. The flip-top bottle makes wetting a Q-tip difficult and I never know how much to squirt onto a cotton ball. For an inexpensive eye makeup remover that actually works, try Almay.

I've been purchasing this lipstick in Blushing Nude for almost a decade. I love it because the color is bright even though it's a nude shade. The formula is soft, creamy, and has a slight shine when first applied, making it a good choice for dry lips. The color does last a long time, but Clinique's claim that it looks "just applied" for hours isn't true. The color lasts for hours, but as a muted version of itself. My only other gripe is with the packaging: the cap is a bit loose so it often falls off in my purse.

This tanner stained my legs orange. It also smells like dead skunk and leaves streaks. There are too many good self-tanners on the market to waste your money on this one.

It's a pity this product made my face look like an oil slick, because its packaging is quite clever. The brush sheds a little, but other than that it provides easy, quick, and even distribution. It's also very affordable for mineral makeup. Unfortunately, the actual product is a sparkly mess. It didn't cover even the most minor of imperfections, nor did it look natural, it just looked cheap and tacky.
