    bareMinerals Get Started Kit

A Great Deal And Great Products

I'd been wanting to try Bare Minerals for a long time (love those infomercials) but hesitated to shell out for the starter kit. A few weeks back I finally did, and so far I'm very pleased! It's a great product for "no-makeup makeup" types like myself. Usually I use a drugstore brand of pressed mineral powder in lieu of foundation. Until I tried Bare Minerals, I didn't realize how my usual product tends to settle into the fine lines around my eyes and sometimes changes color during the day. Bare Minerals blends right into your skin - so well that you only need to use it in small corrective areas if desired - doesn't accentuate lines or flakes and stays put. The brushes that come with the kit are a fantastic value. The only cons I've found so far is that the "warmth" product is so potent that I find it difficult to apply correctly (I have to cut it with just the right amount of mineral veil), and that's it's not an on-the-go kind of product. I like to slap my makeup on during my morning bus/train ride, and with loose powder it's just not gonna happen. Otherwise it's awesome, and a good value since you won't need to use much.

  • Maybelline New York Full 'N Soft Washable Mascara

I tried this mascara based on a review I read here about the best drugstore deals. It's my new favorite! The colors and coverage are rich - one coat seems to look just right for all styles and occasions. It doesn't smudge during the day. It took a little more effort to remove than I would expect from something named "washable," though.

Not as great as the regular formula

I tried the regular formula of the mascara based on the review I read here and loved it. I picked up the waterproof version for a wedding and came out pretty disappointed. The coverage is much thinner than I expected, and it left smudges beneath my eyes (I only apply to top lashes). It may have smudged less if I didn't have to apply 2+ layers to achieve the desired look.

    Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara

    Flaky and irritating

I was unplesantly surprised with this mascara. It flaked into my eyes and caused serious irritation with my contact lenses. The application and overall look were pretty, but of course not worth it for the discomfort. Still love much of Neutrogena's other makeup and pretty much all their skincare.

  • Neutrogena Weightless Volume Wax-Free Mascara

Neutrogena delivers on many of their makeep items, but mascara is not their forte. This one is simply too natural, even for daytime. I also found it had a strange smell, though it's possible I purchased an old tube (you never know with drugstores). Thank goodness it was cheap!

  • Eucerin Extra Protective Moisture Lotion SPF 30

This moisturizer is perfect for users who prefer physical suncreen (as opposed to chemical) and a gentle, fragrance-free product. Not only is it non-irritating and protective, the sun protection (micronized zinc oxide and titanium oxide) can't be beat. I discovered halfway through summer that my face was falling several shades behind the rest of my body, and I slather daily with SPF 50! That is solid proof that those physical sunblock ingredients are doing their job.

Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Day Lotion SPF 20

Too heavy for summer, but great protection

I decided to try this product a few months back when I was looking for some extra protection from fine lines (I'm 30 and just starting to show a few). Although I have always worn daily SPF, this product made me feel more protected somehow. However, the consistency really is too heavy for a humid NYC summer. I feel greasy at the end of the workday, and I previously did not with lighter, oil-free formulas. I guess I should have expected this, but this heavier formulation will have to sit in my medicine cabinet until winter. Also a note to sensitive gals: I did experience a light tingling sensation during the first few applications, especially following exfoliation. This subsided over time.

    Fresh Bath & Shower Gel

    Love the Hesperides scent

The Hesperides scent is grapefruit, and I love fresh citrus scents on hot, humid days. This a good formulation that smells great but doesn't linger after your shower or bath (doesn't interfere with other fragrances). The bottle goes a long way because it's very sudsy, and also makes a great bubble bath. I layer it with the matching eau de toilette because I love the refreshing scent.

  • Olay Ultra Moisture In-Shower Body Lotion

Olay Ultra Moisture In-Shower Body Lotion

Hard to find, but a great time-saver

I used the Moisturinse Sensitive Skin formula when the first version of this product was around. It looks like they have reformulated it, and I have seen this shea butter variety and an anti-aging one in a few stores. It's the perfect time saver in the shower, and if you're in a humid climate you can even skip a day now and then. FYI for sensitive gals: the original Moisturinse Extra Dry and Shea Butter formulas left me a bit itchy.

  • Olay Body Thermal Pedicure

This is not my favorite foot treatment ever, but it's a nice way to de-funkify your feet quickly in the shower or bath. My feet take a lot of abuse in a walking city (NYC), so this alone does not prepare them for a pedicure. But the heat is comforting, and my feet feel clean afterward.
