  • Clinique Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser

I got this as a sample in those Clinique gift sets. It cleans my skin pretty well and doesn't leave much makeup behind, but has trouble with waterproof eye makeup. It doesn't feel like it's drying out my skin afterwards and doesn't leave it rubbery and taut feeling like many foaming cleanser. It stings a bit when it gets into your eyes, but besides from that, it neither breaks me out or irritates my skin. Unless you're a loyal Clinique fan, however, there are many other foaming cleansers of comparable quality and much less cost.

  • Rimmel London Natural Bronzer

    Rimmel London Natural Bronzer

    Good Contouring Product

First things first! I am the pastiest Asian this side of the Pacific, or to speak with slightly less exaggeration, part of the Pasty Pantheon of the East Pacific. Also worth noting is that my undertones are probably more yellow rather than pink-ish. I bought this product in “Sun Light,” but probably should have not. Sun Light is the lighter brown shade that is matte with no shimmer. I use this powder not for looking tanner, but for contouring as costume make up (Are you rolling your eyes yet?). How is use this product is that I apply it under my cheek bones and down the sides of my nose with a wide shadow brush. I think it really helps give my dumpling face some definition! Unfortunately, it is a tad too orange looking for me, and would probably be better suited for people with pinker under tones. The orange effect is not extremely noticeable, though, and I continue to use this product despite not being completely happy with how it looks at times in certain lighting inside pictures. Besides that, the product looks quite natural, goes onto your skin quite smoothly without caking, and blends very well. I think the bronzer has very good color payoff that is buildable in case for whatever look you want. The formula doesn’t make my face look muddy or dirty at all. The powder stays well on my skin and does not dry me out or cause any formation of pimples. A pan goes for five US dollars at most American drugstores, and has lasted me years. Even if you use it daily, I think this product has a really good value! Just don’t forget to swipe down the surface of it every now and then with alcohol to curb funky critters growing in the pan that can cause break outs.

  • CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadows

This little shadow goes for about three US dollars at most American drugstores. I have only tried “Champagne,” or shade 710, which is a pearly, off-white color great for highlighting any part of the face—not only the eye lids! The powder goes on smoothly with good color pay off, and blends well. However, I would definitely say to use some sort of lid primer!! It stays pretty nicely even on my oily skin if you already completed the foundation on your face. Personally, I didn’t experience much, if any, creasing from this product in that case. I didn’t find that this powder dried out my skin or break me out, too!

  • Duo Eyelash Adhesive

    Duo Eyelash Adhesive

    Stinky but Goody

Yes, this product stinks!! As in, it smells bad, not performs badly. I think the odor resembles that of not-very-fresh-fish, but I might have gotten a strange tube or my olfactory systems might need calibration. But the smell fades after ten or so minutes or my nose has just made peace with it, so I don’t think that is much of a deal breaker. Anyways, it is about six US dollars for a little tube available at most major US drugstores. I have the variety that comes in a tube. I have not tried it in clear, only black, but as far as I can see, I don’t see notice the glue that much! I don’t think it really matters what color you buy unless you are going to be wearing fake eyelashes that are not black, of course. This glue holds well even on my oily skinned eye lids and does not irritate my eyes whatsoever. You have to put in a little more work for the edges of the lashes to stick, but once they do, you are golden. I put a strip of the glue on the band of the eyelashes, wiggle the band into a “u” and “n” shape for 20 seconds for the glue to become a little tacky, then apply to my eyelash by holding onto the fake eye lash tips, press down for 20 more seconds while adjusting them, and voila! Lashes that will stay stuck all day through sweat and oily skin. I have not encountered any skin irritation with this product either and would recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable lash glue. Also, don’t forget to trim the edges of your lashes to fit your lash line or the sharp edge of the eye lash band will jab into your tear duct and make both me and you very sad!

  • E.L.F. Eyebrow Kit

This kit only costs 3 USD! Three dollars! It is part of elf’s “Studio” line of makeup, which costs two more dollars than their one dollar normal line of makeup, but I think all of us can manage the small extra cost. Go ahead and give it a try if you are even slightly on the edge of considering whether or not to add eyebrow makeup to your bag. I only wear this for special occasions so my eyebrows show up on camera, but I think it would be good for daily use. Even though I have black, semi-dense eyebrows, I actually use this in Medium because I find that the darkest shade of eyebrow makeup always looks way too goofy and cartoonish on me. Maybe it’s because I’m super pasty? I always come out looking like Bert from Sesame Street if I wear the darkest shade, even if I try so hard to apply it carefully. Anyways, I think Medium works well on me and defines and fills in my brows well. The kit comes with a wax and a powder and a little dual-headed brush applicator with a slanted wax applying tip and a powder brush tip that works competently. You have to really work it with the wax end, though! As in, the wax can sometimes be a little tough and the little tiny brush has a bit of a tough time picking up enough wax. At the very least, this small difficulty in applying the wax will stop you from putting on too much product. I think both wax and powder has good staying power and I haven’t noticed any smudging or much fading throughout the day. Both wax and powder have not given me any adverse skin reactions, and I would recommend this eyebrow kit to anyone on a budget.

  • E.L.F. False Lashes

    E.L.F. False Lashes

    Hubba Hubba *-*

For the Dramatic set: These are a little bit of a step up from the Natural set. I don’t think it’s that dramatic, to be honest. Go ahead and put the two sets side and side and you will see some increase in length and density of the lashes, but it’s not like one is a dry, dead brush and the other is a fuzzy caterpillar drag queen. Nevertheless, I love these! They are only a dollar. I haven’t tried the glue so I can’t comment on it, but it’s there if you forget your dedicated lash glue or if you’re just a first timer wanting to try out some fake eyelashes. I use EOS eyelash glue that can be found for 6 USD in most major American drugstores, and it works pretty well! Don’t forget to trim the edges though so they don’t jab painfully into your tear ducts! They also put up well with being cleaned and tugged on with eye makeup remover.

    E.L.F. Essentials Natural Lash Kit

    Great price for great lashes!

Always wanted that lush-but-not—quite-Ru-Paul lash look? Try a pair of these! Okay, so first things first. This looks “Natural” if you already have fabulous long, curled lashes. I wear false eyelashes with costumes, and I would wear this for the natural look for a character though! It’s a good stage “Natural,” but not quite a mere mortal’s definition of “Natural,” unless, of course, you’re already born with the aforementioned Lashes of the Gods. Nevertheless, I love these! It’s only a dollar. The fringe is not quite as thick as more glamorous looks, so these are good for the more reserved eye makeup lovers around. I haven’t tried the glue so I can’t comment on it, but it’s there if you forget your dedicated lash glue or if you’re just a first timer wanting to try out some fake eyelashes! Don’t forget to trim the edges though so they don’t jab painfully into your tear ducts! They also put up well with being cleaned and tugged on with eye makeup remover.

  • NYX Cosmetics NYX Liquid Black Liner

NYX Cosmetics NYX Liquid Black Liner

Spread your wings something something Kelly Clarkson reference!!

One bottle of this liner will set you back about only 6 USD. I have had my bottle for years and it has yet to dry out! I intend to keep using it until it runs out or I get pinkeye and decide to have fabulously lined eyes anyways. The formula goes on smoothly and doesn’t skip or tug. It is a rather bold black that I love for special occasion looks. The provided brush has good control so let those wings out!! I haven’t had any adverse skin or eye reactions to this liner either. It stays a long time even on my greasy skin and does not smudge at all—unless of course you accidentally touch it or blink when it is drying! Dry time is about 5 minutes. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an affordable black liquid liner.

  • E.L.F. Studio High Definition Powder
    10.0

    E.L.F. Studio High Definition Powder

    Great finishing powder

This powder is such a good product for such an amazing price! One reasonably-sized box of powder costs 6 USD and has last me years even with liberal usage during my more important makeup days. From my experience, it is widely available in most American drugstore make up counters like Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS—so it’s quite easy to find! I use this during applying my cosplay makeup and it photographs really well—it is neither chalky nor too shiny nor sparkly on camera! The powder itself is very fine and blends very well, and doesn’t setting into creases and crevices on your face. The package comes in a sifter with a little puff that I like to use to put on the powder initially, then I go over the powder with a big, fluffy makeup brush in light, circular motions for blending. I like to use the product after applying concealer/foundation/contouring and after applying eye makeup before mascara. It helps to blend in all my makeup as well as set everything between layers. I think the powder does a good job of giving you that polished finish and absorbs oil throughout the day. It hasn’t made me break out and neither does it accentuate any flakey or dry parts of my skin. I would recommend this powder to anyone who needs a good finishing/setting/oil-absorbing powder for picture purposes. One downside is the sifter is a bit messy so this is not the greatest powder to use for touch ups on the go. I just tape over the holes whenever I have to take this powder with me on trips to minimize the mess. I also think this powder might be better as a blotting powder if it contained SPF, but hopefully your over makeup layers already contain some! Last thing worth noting is that elf doesn’t test on animals. Set your mind at ease!

  • Olay Oil Minimizing Clean Toner
    7.0

    Olay Oil Minimizing Clean Toner

Good for oily skin, not so great so sensitive and/or dry skin

A frugal buy at 720 ml or 7 ounces for about 5 USD! I use this after double cleansing plus or minus exfoliating and before moisturizer. This toner has a considerable amount of witch hazel and alcohol, so I would not recommend this for anyone with sensitive and/or dry skin. It is rather harsh like many other astringent toners found in American drugstores. However, if you have oily skin (like me!), it's a good toner that helps keep you matte for a few hours and helps pick up whatever your cleanser leaves behind, leaving skin feeling clean and matte and not too dry. I also haven't broken out on it, so that's always a plus.
