    Pureology Purify Shampoo

Makes it easier to say "buh-bye" to product buildup.

I've had big problems for many moons with product buildup. It's a nasty, flaky scalp that can result from using hair products like creams, serums, and mousses. And I've tried my share of clarifying shampoos, and many of them seemed to help a bit, but they left my hair so parched I had to follow the shampoo with a drenching of deep conditioner to keep my poor strands from getting dehydrated. When I decided to up the ante by consulting the girls at Planet Beauty, one of the associates surprised me by informing me that the sulfates in many clarifying shampoos can actually lead to a flakier scalp! So, I promptly checked out of Planet Beauty with this shampoo, which was amongst her top recommendation brands. This product really did produce wonderful results in terms of my hair health. Not only did the flakes drastically diminish, but my hair was left smooth, soft, and smelling fresh with a pretty, perky, "natural" kind of scent. Although it did not banish the flakes in their entirety, I'm happy with the significant improvement. If you decide to purchase this, do two applications. With each washing, leave it on for 3-5 minutes, depending on the level of buildup.

  • Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark-Circle Eye Roller

Although the formula applies thinly, I liked the instant natural-looking coverage I got. Sometimes, I even apply a bit of this on my upper eye area to boost the brightness of my peepers. I use a slew of products for my under-eyes, since I tend to get some bad dark circles. As such, this product is just one of many in my eye-regime, so it works well in a "team" for me. Typically, I use eye cream, moisturizer, then this eye roller, and then apply a layer of my eye concealer over it. By itself, I admit, this product is just OK. But I've found it to be a good addition to my routine.

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Washable Bold Eye Mascara

Take it from a girl born without those doll-lashes. It works!

I tried this mascara without researching reviews beforehand, and luckily, I made a good choice! Apparently, this stuff is a classic favorite, and I can see why. It really leaves my lashes lush and substantially thicker. I have naturally thin, thin lashes, so I get excited when I discover a drugstore brand that really gives them that "va-va-voom." Just don't go overboard with layering it. I've found that overdoing it results in a mangled, clumpy mess.

    MAC 266 Small Angle Brush

An essential in my cosmetic case!

Of the beauty products worth the splurge, makeup brushes are one of these. This is one of my go-to eyeshadow brushes in my routine. I use it to create a defined line when using black or dark eyeshadows, and the tapered brush helps me achieve a slight or dramatic "winged" look to the ends of my ends with ease. It also "grabs" my eyeshadow and delivers concentrated pigment, so that's less time fussing over the intensity of the color. Yes, MAC is very, very expensive, but these brushes are dependable tools that last quite a while and make your daily cosmetic application less of a hassle and more of an art form. Save up for this brush, or any of the MAC brushes, if you have to!

  • Stila Lip Glaze

    Stila Lip Glaze

Honestly, I was expecting higher reviews for this!

In my opinion, I got great results from these glosses. They never leave me with that excessively glossed up look that appears like I've spread a layer of honey on my lips. I find that this gives me that "just right" layer of gloss that plumps up my lips while also adding a hint of color. It's long-lasting, and tastes good to boot! What really makes these a special find for me, though, is the applicator brush. I love these tapered, pointed brushed. They help me define and fill my lips with much more control than those "squeeze bottles." I got a set of these from Costco at a Costo-worthy price. I'm not sure if Costco still carries these sets, but if they do, I highly recommend the purchase. My favorite shades? Creme Bouquet, Apricot, and Raisin.

  • Stila Perfecting Concealer

    Stila Perfecting Concealer

Stila's eyeshadows aren't my only go-to products of hers...

I normally don't pick up my concealer from pricey beauty supplies, but I had a gift card to Planet Beauty. So, "what the heck," I thought, "More than $25 for under-eye concealer? Why not?" I'm a HUGE fan of Stila eyeshadows, so I decided to give this spin in my routine. This product delivers in thickness and coverage, and I was happy to find my dark circles drastically diminished after applying this. I do, however, recommend making sure you have a base of moisturizer before going to work with this. Otherwise, it might look a bit cakey. I also like applying this to my upper lids to really brighten up my eyes. As a college student, I've had my fair share of nights spent studying last-minute for exams or finishing up terms papers I should have completed well before the due-date. But I turn to this concealer the day after to disguise the result of nights like these!

  • Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof Mascara

Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof Mascara

The best "detailing" mascara wand I've tried!

I love thickening formulas, but I never achieve a truly "defined" result with the plumping mascaras. Even though this member of Maybelline mascara family may not fatten lashes, it remarkably enhances lashes because of its separating power that gives each of my lashes a presence. Ultimately, it seems to be the "micro" wand that creates such well-outlined lashes. I was a little skeptical when I twisted opened this product, but the small size of the wand really helps me in getting a "clean" look with its application. Overall, I just love the lack of "clump" and "crustiness" this mascara allows me!

Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Hard As Wraps

Eh. Didn't really live up to its name, I thought.

I bought this in an attempt to add thickness and strength to my overworked nails. Sadly, I'm not too excited about this product. I ended up tossing it! This is a cheap option at drugstores, but I advise you to shell out a bit (or a lot more) for good-quality top coat. From my product-hunting endeavors, I've learned that trying a slew of cheap "so-so" top coats may end up just costing you more in the end, as opposed to investing in a "wow" top coat that you can turn to again and again.

  • Essie Good to Go Top Coat

Essie Good to Go Top Coat

Lacks the goopy-ness of the cheaper brands.

It's a little pricier compared to the $3-4 top coats like those from Sally Hansen. But it really glides over freshly applied polish beautifully without smearing or leaving a sluggishly-drying glob of top coat. Just don't overdo it! With every layer, just aim for a thin application. I haven't tried every top coat known to man, so I guess I can't really determine if this stuff is the best of the best. But it works well and gets the job done. Personally, though, I recommend looking into Essie's LuxeEffects top coats :) Those are my faves so far in my book.

  • Essie Luxeeffects Glitter Top Coat

    Essie Luxeeffects Glitter Top Coat

Again, Essie does not let me down!

I love and cherish the Essie brand, especially after moving my manicures from the nail salon to my home after getting stricter with my budget. So when I found this top coat collection at the drugstore for the first time, I didn't hesitate to impulsively grab the last bottle of A Cut Above from the shelf. I am SO IN LOVE WITH THIS STUFF! I'm enthralled with updating my manis and pedis just because it's so much fun to experiment with "glamour-rizing" my collection of polish shades. It's also easy to get your ideal level of glittery-ness. You can stop at a minimal swash of sparkle if you want, or you can top your nails with so much sparkle that your hands can pose as a party's disco ball. Although A Cut Above contains darkish-pink sparkles, the effect compliments an array of different shades. Prior to using this, I would huff with impatience at the notion of finishing my mani/pedi time with the final step: the top coat. The boring, colorless finishing touch that seemed to just annoy me with its tacked-on effort and drying-time. With this collection, Essie finally made me excited to put on top coat! Yay for top coat!
