    bareMinerals Get Started Kit

    Great product for makeup beginners

The thing I love most about this starter kit is that it really teaches you how to apply makeup in an essentially fool-proof and flawless way. If you're a beauty beginner or someone who isn't very good at applying foundation, this product will revolutionize your look and your beauty routine...But, if you're a makeup pro and are already great at applying foundation/achieving an air-brushed look, this product won't impress you because you're already great at doing makeup in a way that works for you. As someone who rarely wore foundation and had blah results anytime I did branch out and wear liquid foundations, this product was a god-send. It feels light, isn't obvious I'm wearing makeup, and makes my skin look flawless and radiant. This kit comes with a pretty big price tag, though, so I wouldn't recommend it to someone on a tight budget...If you can't afford the kit, buy cheaper mineral makeup, primer, and brushes, and teach yourself how to apply it by taking advantage of the application info you can get from the infomercials and girls in the store...After all, I really do think the makeup application lessons are the most valuable things BareMinerals has to offer. If you're able to spend the money on the starter kit, that's great and I think you'll be happy with your purchase. The only skin types I would warn against it are extremely fair ladies: if you have super-pale skin, you should work with a sales person to build your own starter kit, because the lightest shade of powder (which is the one you'll need) isn't available in any of the starter kits.

  • L'Oreal Paris Colour Juice Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss

I'm generally a fan of L'oreal products, but I don't think this makes a great stand-alone gloss. Having said this, I think it works great as a top coat over lipstick. The rounded plastic applicator is ideal for applying gloss over lipstick, because it doesn't absorb the lipstick color at all. However, I don't like this product as a stand-alone lip gloss because I like having a more contoured applicator, or ideally a sponge/brush-tip applicator to apply my lip gloss. If you want to use this as an everyday lip gloss, I'd recommend getting a light, natural-looking shade so it can be more forgiving of the unwieldy applicator. I made the mistake of buying "glazed poppies," which is a vibrant mauve color, but I never wear it because of what a pain it is to apply.

  • Maybelline New York Shiny-licious Lip Gloss

This lip gloss is a great bang for the buck. I bought it in lolly pink on a whim when I was on a lip-gloss-buying spree, and this is the one lip gloss from that shopping trip that's still a mainstay in my purse. It has good staying power for a gloss, and doesn't disappear minutes after applying. It also has a great sheen to it, and it isn't too gooey. It looks good on its own, or it's a great gloss to put over your lipstick. Another thing that makes me love this gloss is that it's packaged really well, and there's never any product build up around the cap. So many glosses have caps and tubes that aren't designed well and end up somehow leaking product all over the linings of my handbags... Not with this gloss, though... With this gloss, I love both the tube and the product inside...Oh, and I also love the spongy applicator. Some people are turned off by the flavors of certain colors, but I'd recommend experimenting and finding the right shade and flavor for you. At this price, the experimenting will be well worth it, because this really is a top-quality lip gloss that's a true bargain.

  • Smashbox Focal Point Mascara

    Smashbox Focal Point Mascara

    Lashes for days...

And not a clump in sight! As someone with really fine lashes, most mascaras often clump up on me and I rarely get the length I want, but Smashbox is the exception to this rule! It gives me everything I could want in a mascara and more. It really defines my lashes, separating them and making them look fuller. It also gives me more length than I've ever achieved with a mascara. The trick to getting length is to keep brushing it onto your lashes with an upward motion...Repeat this upward brushing motion as long as you want, and I promise you'll get whatever length lashes you're looking for. Not only will you get a great length, but you'll also be completely clump free. The brush is small, so it works great on very small eyes and large eyes alike. The salesgirl at ULTA told me I'd come back and thank her for her recommendation, and I must admit that I loved this product so much that I actually did.

  • Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Polish Gloss
    3.0

Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Polish Gloss

Deceptive, and not in a good way

This product's goal is obviously to create the deception of full, pouty, glossy lips. Does it achieve this goal? Yes, HOWEVER.... Is it worth the hefty price tag? Decidedly not. As other reviewers note, this lip polish comes in a deceptively large bottle that has a surprisingly small amount of product in it. I justified this purchase because I figured it would last me a while, but one application didn't even last me an hour, I was constantly having to reapply it, and my tube was half-empty within a week. The main thing I liked about Buxom is that it stings less than a lot of lip plumpers, but I still wouldn't recommend it to someone with money to blow...This is because, not only is the packaging deceptive, but it's messy; excess lip gloss tends to build up at the mouth of the tube, and it often leaks out and stains the lining of my purse. I realize that this is a common problem with many lip gloss tubes, but for $18 I expect my lip gloss to be packaged well enough not to stain the linings of my nice handbags.

    Benefit Dandelion

    Pale skin's best friend

This has been an everyday go-to product of mine for years. I apply dandelion blush over my sunscreen, dash on mascara and eyeliner, and I'm out the door. This blush makes me look awake and not washed out, and even draws attention away from any imperfections in my skin. It has such a subtle pinkness and shimmer to it that it isn't obvious I'm wearing blush...This is to say, instead of screaming blush overload, my skin just looks like its had a good night's sleep (even if it hasn't). I'd recommend dandelion for anyone who has fair or ruddy skin. People with more tanned or olive complexions should try one of benefit's other shades.

  • Pond's Cold Cream Cleanser

As I made the transition from teen to adult, it took several years for me to find the right cleansing routine for my less zit prone, more grown-up skin. I tried everything from expensive skin regimens to the olive-oil cleansing method, but the moment I washed my face with Ponds, I knew it was the answer to my epidermal prayers. A lot of skin products give me problems with dry patches and major sensitivity, but this cold cream leaves skin feeling cleansed yet moisturized...And, this stays true week after week. It removes all residue of makeup and sunscreen that many other cleansers leave behind, and I'd recommend it for all skin types except for oily ones. This really is a great way to wash the day off, and I love how it can double as an exfoliator! (To get exfoliating effects, just massage it into your skin, remove with a warm washcloth, and then splash cold water on your face to close your pores back up.) This really is one of the best beauty buys out there!

  • mark Face Xpert Flawless Touch Makeup

I ordered this light foundation because I remembered reading somewhere that it was incredibly easy to apply, but I think I only used it once before the applicator broke. The color of the makeup was nice and the coverage was light and natural, but I can't get past the poor packaging. The makeup is packaged with an applicator sponge built into the cap, and the flimsy sponge started detaching itself and falling out of the cap almost instantaneously ... It's pretty much impossible to get the foundation out of the bottle now that the applicator is broken, so this definitely wasn't money well spent. I'd recommend that you save yourself the money and bother and just stick to old fashioned foam wedges and your standby foundation.

  • L L.A.M.B. Fragrance By Gwen Stefani

L L.A.M.B. Fragrance By Gwen Stefani

    Sophisticated yet spunky

The moment I smelled this fragrance in a magazine, I knew it was my new favorite scent. I was really put off at first by the fact that it's a celebrity fragrance, but when I went to Sephora to try it on, it smelled too perfect on my skin to pass up. It has a unique yet sophisticated musk and floral scent, and I think it's the perfect fragrance for anyone who loves glamour yet has a bit of an artistic flair. It's hip yet classic enough for someone of just about any age to wear, and the price tag is so reasonable (especially when compared to what I usually shell out for Chanel fragrances) that I'm hoping I can make this my signature scent forever. The one thing I wish they would change is the spritzing mechanism, which tends to jam easily; if only the bottle functioned perfectly, I'd give this product 10 stars, "no doubt."

  • L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Washable Bold Eye Mascara

L'oreal Voluminous Mascara is the best drugstore-brand mascara I've found (and, trust me, I've been looking for a while). This mascara builds volume and length, while managing not to clump-up on my fine lashes, and I consider this a miracle for under $8. If you've got fine lashes and are afraid of clumping, don't be scared off by this product's name; even though fine-lashed ladies are supposed to stay away from volume-building mascara, Voluminous works wonders on my fine lashes and I've never encountered a problem that a lash brush couldn't fix...I prefer the straight brush because I find it easier to use on my small eyes, but my friends with bigger eyes mostly opt for the curved brush. To sum up, this mascara works for both daytime and evening looks, is a great value, and the tube lasts for several months without getting clumpy or crusty the way most drugstore brands do after only a few weeks.
