A Beautiful Smile Relies On Your Muscles

A smile is the most welcoming facial expression you can present to someone. It appears when you’re happy (or at least pretending to be). Yet some people are embarrassed about theirs, and it’s not because they have discoloured teeth.

If you’ve got pearly whites but still hate how you look when you smile, it’s probably because of the way too much of your gums show while you’re doing it. A gummy smile is one of the most common reasons why people feel self conscious, and it can be damaging to one’s self esteem, particularly considering that they shouldn’t feel that way at a time when they’re supposed to be feeling happy.

What’s the Cause of Gummy Smiles?
The answer is fairly simple. It all has to do with the muscles controlling the actions of the upper lip. When you smile, these muscles contract and lift the upper lip near or just above the gumline to create the expression. However, individuals with hyperactive muscles find that their upper lip lifts way above the gumline, exposing far too much gum. The bigger the smile, the higher the lip ascends and the more gum shows. Gummy smiles don’t pose a health risk, but they can be a very embarrassing aesthetic problem.

How To Get A Beautiful Smile
To get rid of a gummy smile, you have two choices: visit a dentist or a trip to a cosmetic clinic. A trip to the dentist may include braces, surgical lip repositioning or maxillofacial surgery. For the less invasive route, go to a cosmetic clinic where they’ll probably recommend a BOTOX injection.

We all know about BOTOX as a treatment for wrinkles. The product relaxes the injected muscles by inhibiting the communication of the chemical (ACH) that triggers the muscles to contract, so that the overlying skin can relax as well, thereby eliminating the presence of wrinkles. Other cosmetic uses for BOTOX have also been successfully found, such as relaxing the jaw muscles to create a less angular facial contour.

When it comes to treating gummy smiles, BOTOX is once again injected into the muscles responsible for the aesthetic problem, but this time the effect isn’t less wrinkles; treatment causes the hyperactive upper lip muscles to relax so that their contractions are limited, decreasing the height to which they can lift. The result is a beautiful smile that lasts about 4 months (or longer if you go regularly).

Now before you dismiss BOTOX as “unnatural”, consider this: the key ingredient is naturally occurring in our world and it is used as a treatment for hyperhidrosis, urinary incontinence, blepharospasms and chronic migraines. The formula used to treat wrinkles and gummy smiles is totally the same as for the treatment of these conditions. The only difference is the amount administered.
