Green, mossy, yet also powdery and mysterious.

A little citrusy, green, but still slightly floral. It's the kind of refreshing but grown-up fragrance you can wear anywhere. One of Chanel's greatest hits as far as I'm concerned.

Hot Couture was originally launched about 10 years ago. The original was scorchingly sweet but also had deeper, richer gourmant/oriental base notes of cocoa and sandalwood. For reasons best known to themselves Givenchy messed with the formula and the result is this raspberry syrup travesty.

You know that sweet, pretty, perky, popular girl you envied so badly in high school, only to bump into her 10 years later and realize she's nice enough but really nothing special? Well, they bottled her, and here she is in fragrance form. I was lured by the light, fresh, delicate opening notes of peony and pink pepper, and bought a bottle immediately. Big disappointment. The scent fades very quickly into soapy insignificance.

This fragrance has a wonderful powdery intensity--I really like the violet, and it's an all round good romantic choice for evening. However, the berry notes are a bit too pronounced for my taste.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Parisienne Eau de Parfum Spray
Refreshing rose, not as modern as you'd think
I find the rose/red berries combination fresh without being too sweet, and there is just a hind of sharpness that comes through afterwards to prevent it from being too straightforwardly retro. But it's still a pretty conventional (or, to be fair, pretty though conventional) rose fragrance, not even remotely as edgy or offbeat as the marketing suggests (as for listing "vinyl" as a note--give me a break). Still very wearable even for work if you don't splash on too much.

Unbelievably rich, spicy, chocolatey floral--you either love it or hate it. I find the lingering gingerbread notes irresistible, both sensual and comforting.

Even though lilac is nowhere on the ingredient list, that's the note that I find stands out. Deliciously low key, soft and inviting floral with a sweet woody note.

It's a step up in intensity from very youthful floral/fuity fragrances, but it's syill very wearable for daytime and basically good harmless fun. Scent lasts a fairly long time and dries down to the same notes you can discern when you first put it on, so there are no surprises. Try it if you like rose but want something modern.

If you think Paris Hilton and Sarah Jessica Parker are parfumerie geniuses, don't bother with this one. But if you are into vintage, retro, mysterious fragrances, this is a wonderful mossy, green blast from the past.
