Conair Ion Shine Instant Heat Hairsetter with Ceramic

A Little Bit of Curl, No Special Shine

For years and years I have used the Caruso Molecular Hairsetter to add volume, curl or waves to my baby-fine hair. Every couple of years or so, I decide to try out other hot rollers or curling irons and last year, I decided to give Conair's Ion Shine Instant Heat Hairsetter a try. It did effectively curl my hair, but I didn't see any extra shine. I also didn't feel like the curl was locked in as long as I would like, and the more traditional structure (solid core versus the foam core of the Caruso curlers) and single size of the rollers didn't allow for as much versatility (wrapping the hair tighter or looser, etc.) as I would prefer. I ended up giving the set away.

    Clinique Almost Lipstick

Almost Lipstick in Black Honey: A Classic

For the past 10 years, I have always had Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey on hand. It was my first "grown up" lipstick (in other words, the first lipstick I bought from a makeup counter rather than a drugstore), and I think it is a great introduction to lip color. With sheer, pretty color that can be layered for richer color, this lipstick is moisturizing and has a little bit of shine. On my lips, which have a fair amount of color naturally, it is a pretty, subtle raspberry color. From talking to my friends, it does seem that this color is pretty universally flattering; most women I know also have a place in their heart for Black Honey. Although I've moved on to other favorite lip colors, I still have Black Honey in my makeup case; it is still a lovely, subtle color to put on when I want to look naturally polished.

  • Bobbi Brown Corrector
    7.0

    Bobbi Brown Corrector

    Decent Undereye Concealer

I have used Bobbi Brown's Corrector in Light Peach for the last couple of years and I think it is a pretty good undereye concealer. The texture is very creamy, which is good for blending and doesn't settle into fine lines under eyes. This is a very opaque concealer, so if you prefer something more sheer that you can layer, this is not the concealer for you. I would recommend applying this concealer before your foundation, as I think it looks more natural blended beneath a "perfect-match" foundation color. The yellow-base of the color does help balance out the purple color of dark circles. I would not recommend this corrector for use on blemishes, so you will need a separate concealer for the rest of your face. Although this concealer is not as versatile as I might like, it is a pretty heavy hitter for undereye circles.

  • Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 Acne Medication

    Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 Acne Medication

Great Blemish Treatment for Young Skin

When I was a teenager, before my skin became super-dry, Clean & Clear's Persa-Gel was my go-to blemish treatment. I would just dab it on at night and, in a day or two, my blemishes would be gone! Now that I'm in my twenties, my skin has become very dry and benzoyl peroxide is too drying as a blemish treatment. But if your skin isn't prone to dryness, this is a great, inexpensive treatment for occasional blemishes.

    Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel

Not Sure What the Hype Is All About

Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel consistently gets great reviews online and in magazines but, unfortunately, I can't see what all the hype is about. Obsessed with self-tanning as I am, I had to try this product out. I don't love the texture; it made me feel like it never quite absorbed. The final color was light and a little orange-y, which is an instant deal-breaker, and it faded very patchily. After my first application, I ended up mixing it with other self-tanners and the color is subtle enough that it didn't cause orange-y color when it was diluted, which is good. However, I wouldn't buy it again.

  • Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch

    Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch

    Disappointing...and Waxy!

When I picked this up at the Clarins counter, the makeup artist who sold it to me told me they call it "girl spackle" because of the way it "fills in" pores and evens out the skin. Unfortunately, I found that it didn't do much to smooth out my large pores. I will say that if I wear it without any makeup, it gives my skin a little bit of a "soft focus" look, but under or over makeup, I can't see a difference at all. And I am not a fan of the texture: I don't like to feel any product or makeup on my face, and this feels a little heavy and waxy to me.

  • Chanel Teint Innocence Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup SPF 12

I think the number one most important thing about makeup, to me, is flawless, natural-looking skin. This can be tricky for me, as I am naturally very pale (my coloring is similar to actress Zooey Deschanel) with very dry skin. I tend to use tinted moisturizers for their sheer finish and moisturizing texture. However, sometimes I need more coverage, and Chanel's Teint Innocence foundation is perfect for that. If I need more coverage during the day, I mix Teint Innocence in Alabaster (Albatre) with my tinted moisturizer; at night I just use the Chanel foundation. This foundation is a little more difficult to blend than a tinted moisturizer; for those with dry skin, it's important to moisturize beforehand. I also apply the foundation with my fingers rather than a sponge, using the warmth of my fingers to help soften the makeup. The color is very close to my natural skin tone, and it goes on very smoothly, leaving a very natural finish. I find that this foundation is a good "step up" from tinted foundation: still relatively sheer, but opaque enough to even out discolorations and blemishes. The finish is really lovely, giving the appearance of naturally glowing skin, and not at all "made up" looking.

  • Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15

Cetaphil's Daily Facial Moisturizer is a good basic moisturizer and, if you have dry skin and are looking for a facial moisturizer, it is a good place to start. I have this moisturizer on hand in case I run out of my usual facial moisturizer (Sinceuticals Emollience) and it is a good back up. I also sometimes mix it with foundation if the foundation needs to be lighter in color or more moisturizing. The only thing that keeps this moisturizer from being my daily go-to is its texture, which is slightly too heavy for me and doesn't absorb as much as I'd like.

    Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Not As Good As Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, But Not Bad

I accidentally bought Cetaphil's Daily Facial Cleanser rather than my usual Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, and I found it to be almost comparable. I did use the entire bottle, although it occasionally left my skin dry and tight-feeling. However, I think it's important to note that my skin is VERY dry and sensitive, and Cetaphil's Gentle Cleanser is really the only cleanser that doesn't leave my skin dry occasionally. For normal or oily skin, I would think that this cleanser would be excellent. I really love Cetaphil's products in general, and have found them to be very gentle so, although this cleanser didn't work best for me, I would still recommend it.

    Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion

Fantastic Moisturizer at an Affordable Price

I've tried several lotions for my sensitive, dry, and eczema-prone skin, and I think this is the most affordable of the effective lotions for that type of skin. This is my daily lotion (and with skin like mine, putting on lotion daily is a necessity), and I love it. It keeps my skin smooth, soft, and eczema-free. It's not too heavy, absorbs quickly, and doesn't have any added scent or other irritants. All in all, this is one of my favorite products.
