  • Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara

My sister and I have very different mascara needs, and Full Exposure is the favorite of both of us. For my light-lashed sister whose lashes need help with length, this product gives a natural result that works with her conservative day-at-the-office look and lasts all day. I, on the other hand, need color and more volume for my already long-lashes, and applying two or three coats gives me full, rock and roll va-va-va-voom without major clumping. The key, we think, is this product's fantastic brush. (Don't you hate when your formerly favorite mascara changes to a plastic brush? Thankfully, Smashbox Full Exposure hasn't gone that route!) Most importantly, Full Exposure doesn't flake or end up all over either of our faces at the end of the day (or night), and it doesn't irritate my contact lenses. Don't ever change the brush, Smashbox! We love this stuff!

Color Elixir by Color Sensational Lip Color

Not Low-Maintainence--Needed Liner to Make it Work (Signature Scarlet, Celestial Coral)

The colors are beautiful (I bought Signature Scarlet and Celestial Coral), but expect to practice to figure out the right amount of product you need. The applicator wand deposits way too much, and so you'll want to scrape some back into the tube. It feels a little more sticky than I'd like, but it still felt moisturizing. I definitely didn't like the fragrance and taste of this product, though. It's a little heavy, and I'm sensitive to floral fragrances in lip products (a faint vanilla would be much better for those of us who are sensitive to fragrances ). This product migrates a lot, so lip liner is definitely in order. I had the best luck with either a clear liner or one the exact color of my natural lip color. Once you get the hang of all this, the colors are really pretty, though. It all depends on how much you're willing to experiment!

Rosebud Perfume Co. Smith's Rosebud Salve Tin

    Love Rosebud Salve's Versatility!

The versatility of Rosebud Salve makes it one of my travel must-haves. I've used it for chapped lips, dry cuticles, and even dry heels. In a pinch, I've also used it to remove stubborn lip stain and mascara before bed. This product will melt in warm climates, though, so putting it in a ziplock bag and never leaving it in a hot car is a must!

    Blistex Lip Medex

Blistex Lip Medix is My Go-To

The air is extremely dry in Los Angeles, and Lip Medix is my go-to for keeping my lips soft and chap-free. Currently I have one in my vanity, one in my pruse, and one on my desk. I apply it when I apply my facial moisturizer, so by the time my makeup is done and ready for lipstick, my lips are nicely conditioned. I also use it at night to take off residual lipstick or lip stains, and of course a few times during the day. The only thing I'd change about this product is that I'd add spf, but I'd be afraid of changing the product's texture--I love how it melts into the skin rather than just sitting on top, as the one with the peachy-beige lid (which does have spf) tends to do.

Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Color

Creamy & Hydrataing! Red Revival is the Perfect Retro Red!

Challenge: I love 1940's makeup looks but have uber-fair skin and chap-prone lips. So when I kept seeing articles declaring how much this or that makeup artist or beauty editor loved Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Red Revival because it "works for nearly everyone" I had to try it. Would this be a red I could finally pull off? Would it be creamy enough to keep my dry lips happy while not sliding off my face? Would the color work for a vintage 40's look? Yes, yes, and yes! The consistency is just-the-right amount of creamy, and it's hydrating enough that Red Revival, mascara, and sunglasses got me through a road trip from So Cal. to Vegas. The sheen was more 1950's than '40's, but the color was so perfectly '40's I was OK with that. For something more matte it would blot down just fine, though (or one could employ the old "light dusting of powder through a tissue trick). It's not the longest wearing, but I get OK wear from it by lining with my Nude Smashbox pencil and applying Red Revival with a brush, blotting with a tissue between coats. The packaging isn't the prettiest, but I've seen worse, and at least the lipstick case color indicates the shade range of your shade, so I can live with it. (I sometimes decant my lipsticks into a palette anyway.) All in all, a really nice lipstick for the money, and I get compliments every time I wear it.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 - Normal

Perfect for sensitive skin all year round: the "Classic Sensitive Forumla" is Fantastic!

Great stuff! The one marked "Classic Sensitive Formula" is their original sunscreen formula and doesn't irritate my fair, super-sensitive combination skin. It's not greasy or sticky, and provides an excellent base for my concealer and foundation. I like that it absorbs quickly but still feels like "enough" moisture in dry areas, yet it's not too much in the oilier areas of my face. Great stuff all-around!

    Dior DiorShow Extase Mascara

Wanted to love it but didn't

I wanted so badly to love this...As someone with long but lighter-than-I'd-like-them-to-be lashes, the promise of big, dramatic doll-eyed nighttime lashes sounds great. Unfortunately this product didn't deliver. The brush was awkward to use, the formula was clumpy and gloppy -- and I usually LOVE a good, thick volumizing mascara-- and after applying I had a lot of post-application clean up to do around my eyes, which isn't the norm for me. The formula is heavy enough that it straightened the work of my eyelash curler, so if you have straight lashes, I recommend overcurling them a bit, because this WILL stick to your lashes if you try to recurl (as I found out the hard way when I broke my own rule about never curling after mascara). Eventually I got a decent result after playing around with this mascara a lot, but it was a long way getting there, and for the price point I expect better performance. On the plus side, it didn't irritate my eyes or contact lenses, but there was a bit of flaking by the end of the evening. Try again, Dior! I've liked other Dior mascaras, but this one? Meh.

  • Judith August The Everything Pencil

    Judith August The Everything Pencil

My go-to concealer! Melts into skin but lasts all say, & matches even the fairest skintones!

This product is my "Desert Island" product! I know...a pencil??? But trust me on this one: it's been a longtime secret "go to" for cosmetic surgery patients to cover bruising, so if it's gentle enough for them...It goes on creamy and melts into the skin --use it sparingly and tap it in with your fingers, and just when you think it won't work it will blend in perfectly. It dries to a non-shimmery, flexible finish that stays put all day even when I forget to set it with powder (though in the hottest part of the summer powder is a must). I also like that it has many uses: concealer, blemish cover, highlighter, eyeshadow base, or line filler. (Before brow guru Anastassia had her own product line, she used this to highlight the arches of her clients, which is how I found about it.) It's one of the few concealers that comes in a shade light enough for my super-fair skin (I use the palest one, called "Ultra Light"), and I also use it as an eyeshadow base when I use pale eyeshadow. For nighttime, I sometimes use it as a cupid's bow highlighter, too. (The Everything Pencil website tells you how to do all these things, so it's great for newbies.) Best of all, this pencil lasts for ages! I go through less than one a year, and I use it EVERY day, so it's a good deal for $16.95. I also keep one in my travel bag. It comes with its own sharpener, and the only drawback I've found is that its blendability means you must put this pencil in the freezer before sharpening...but I can live with that!

    Smashbox Lip Pencil

Love Smashbox The Nude Lip Pencil ! (Comes in 4 Nude shades, not too waxy or dry.)

I was skeptical when I saw the makeup demonstration that claimed your best shade of Smashbox's "The Nude Lip Pencil" is all you need for any lipstick color, but it really works! It comes in 4 Nude shades (Fair, Light, Medium, and Deep--mine is "Fair") and they're neither too warm nor too cool, so there's a shade that works for nearly everyone. The color goes on creamy and not too waxy but still grabs on and is fairly long lasting for a regular pencil. Most of all, I like the versatility of this product: It works well as a liner for all of my lip colors, or it's creamy enough to work as a liner and fill-in for a natural lip. Or sometimes I line and fill in with the Nude pencil and then top with gloss. Easy to sharpen, a lot less drying than my other brands of pencils, really versatile, and a lot of bang for the buck!

    Revlon ColorStay Eye Liner

Like it better than Urban Decay 24/7 pencil!

I love this slim. automatic crayon-y pencil! It's as creamy and pigmented as Urban Decay 24/7 pencil and lasts just as long on me, but I like it even better because of the hidden, built-in sharpener at the non-business end. Usually I smudge it out, but when I want an inky, dramatic liquid liner look, I fake it with this in black. Application is so creamy and pigmented no one can tell it's a pencil, but it's so much faster, easier, and more hygienic. Of all the eyeliners in my arsenal (at many different pricepoints), I reach for these pencils the most. Usually I use the black, but the brown is my favorite for summer looks (especially with coral lips)..
