    Chapstick True Shimmer

    Not For Women of Color

I recently had to opportunity to test out the new True Shimmer lip balm from Chapstick, and I wanted to let you know what I thought. There were some good qualities, and some not so good qualities. So here it is, Chapstick True Shimmer: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly! The Good: Chapstick really really did a bang-up job on the flavors of these lip balms. I had the chance to try them in Botanical Berry and Tropical, and two new flavors that will be in stores later this summer: Blended Fruit Sherbert and Peppermint Rush. Blended Fruit Sherbert, Botanical Berry and Tropical were fruity and sweet without tasting fake or chemical-ly. They even smelled good. I also liked Peppermint Rush, but was surprised at how strong it was. There is definitely some peppermint oil in here, so beware. It's great though if you want a minty burst, like I sometimes do to pep me up. The Bad: There is zero sun protection in these balms. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Chapstick can't release a flavored lip product with a decent SPF. With all that we know about skin cancer and sun protection, this really makes no sense. Boo for that! The Ugly: The "shimmer" in True Shimmer is really not much more than some silver/white flecks, that look horribly ashy on pigmented lips. Because of this, I would NOT recommend True Shimmer to any person of color. I got a little carried away with Peppermint Rush (who I believe is the worst culprit of the bunch), and I ended up looking like Tyrone Biggums. Not a good look. Which was a shame because it was actually rather moisturizing. Conclusion: If you're not worried about sun protection, then I would recommend Chapstick True Shimmer for its moisture factor. As far as the shimmer, I would only wear it in moderation or under something else.

  • N.Y.C. New York Color Long-Wearing Nail Enamel

I guess you get what you pay for, and I didn't get much! This polish is watery and thin. The application was streaky and uneven. I can't say enough about how awful this is. The worst!

  • Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash - Fragrance Free

This is my stand-by body wash for my uber-sensitive skin. It never irritates my skin or causes an eczema flare-up. I wish it were more moisturizing, but I can't really complain. If you have TRUE sensitive sensitive skin, this is a must!

    Great Masacra While It Lasts...

I really liked this mascara. I suspect that its the same formula and brush as Lash Blast since they're both owned by Proctor and Gamble. It gave me really full, clean lashes, but the tube dried out really quickly. This has also happened to me with Lash Blast, so there's something to them that makes them dry out quickly. $10 a tube for a drugstore mascara is too much to have to replace it every few weeks.

  • Aveda Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser

I don't see what people love about this cleanser. It made my oily skin SUPER dry. The scrubbing beads do nothing to exfoliate. To each her own, but this definitely was a no-no for my skin!

    Best in a Looong Time!

Wow! This is the best cleanser I've used in a really long time. It exfoliates really well, but is creamy and foamy at the same time. Its hard to describe! I just really love it. Its only been a couple of days, but my skin has never felt this clean or this soft, I think this will end up being a fave product for me. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

    Burt's Bees Garden Tomato Toner

    Clean and Refreshing

I was hesitant to buy this because of the alcohol in it. The last thing my skin needs is to be dry and irritated. It did burn when applied, but it didn't dry my skin out! In fact, it left my skin feeling really clean and balanced. I probably wouldn't use this in the winter, but I'll use it this summer until I find something alcohol free.

  • Burt's Bees Garden Tomato Complexion Soap for Oily and Troubled Skin

I really wanted to like this but it was way too drying, which is how it deals with breakouts, I guess. Not only that, but it left a rubbery film on my skin AND on my Clarisonic brush. NOT good. Won't be using this again.

  • Soft Sheen Carson Dark and Lovely Reviving Colors Hair Color

This fades without even washing your hair! Not a good sign. I put this on to cover a permanent coloring mishap, and I can see the crazy color underneath coming through. The first night, some came off on my white pillowcases. I was NOT happy. Its gone downhill since then. I don' think this will last the 6-8 washes it claims. Too bad. The conditioner that came with was great, though. It defined my curls and made my hair really soft.

Soft Sheen Carson Dark and Lovely Permanent Hair Colour

Vibrant Hair Color with Dark and Lovely!

This is my first foray into home haircolor. I went naturally recently and decided that this is as good a time as any to dabble in some color. I am usually an advocate of leaving hair color to the professionals, but with the economy like it is, and my hair as short as it is, I figured why pay someone what I can do myself? Well, when Dark and Lovely says they're giving you vibrant color, they mean it! I bought their Permanent Hair Colour in Sunkissed Brown #377. It's way to red for my taste (I look like Malcom X), but after looking at the box again, I realize that its definitely the same color on the model, so my dissatisfaction with the color is my own fault, I guess. The gel made it quick and easy to apply. It didn't smell too bad, though it burned like heck while I waited for the color to set. A good moisturizer is definitely needed afterward, because my hair was left dry and hard, and the conditioner that came with it was not cutting it. Homey the Clown color aside, I would use this again in another color. I've since followed up with Dark and Lovely Reviving Colors Semi-Permanent Hair Color to mask the red, and will post a review of this later.
