Makeup
I've been using totalbeauty for their articles and reviews for quite some time now, and after reading an article about the prevalence of fake reviews I decided that I'd start writing my own. After writing about three reviews I noticed that so many reviews differed drastically and I think it's because of individuals' hair and skin type. While some people included that information with their review, others didn't. I think this site would be much more efficient if as part of the review process we'd have to choose our hair/skin type that would be shown along with a review, because it could be very misleading if, for example, someone with terribly dry, sensitive skin and minimal breakouts were to shoot down an acne product with 10% benzoyl peroxide in it. Anyway, I just figured that if this feature were added it would make for some more honest reviews. Otherwise, I think this is an awesome and helpful website.
12 RepliesI was totally unaware of "dishonest" reviews. I review on an unbiased, totally open and honest basis because I feel that lying serves no purpose and helps no one. And it really doesn't make any sense. Everyone does have different hair/skin types and sensitivity levels and I definitely agree - we are all so unique and so is each experience in using different products that a quick mention of our skin type/hair type/coloring would really be helpful and make readers aware of which reviews don't apply to them. For instance, I recently gave a positive review on a light spray-on moisturizer that didn't really work for my extra-dry skin, but would probably be perfect for those with minimal moisturization needs and stated that in my review. We should all be putting all the thought and detail into these reviews so that others can make the most informed product choices. I'm not sure I would say the reviews are "dishonest" but rather not very detailed as the reviewer themselves. But good call, newbie! ;)
A written review is a persons opinion of a product.. I don't believe anyone is being dishonest. What would be is if they tried to guess how the product would work for anyone else.. If you don't like it why continue to read that section? Yes, I did read all you had to say. I believe you're missing the point of trying and reviewing a product. We aren't doing market research. We are average people asked for an opinion based on our experience.
As an online beauty reviewer for more than thirteen years, this site is as real as it gets! Sometimes I'm taken aback by how candid the reviews are (they'll simply be named "Yuck," "Ugh," "Never Again," "Obsessed," etc.). It would be nice to know the writer's skin/hair type and other details, but it generally comes out in the piece. I find this to be completely genuine and truly enjoyable. Women vary greatly; as they say, "one man's ceiling is another man's floor!"
That's an awesome suggestion. I agree with you; some kind of system like that needs to be implemented.
I've been a silent reader for the past 2 weeks...today I joined and already did 10 reviews on products that I actually used and it was my honest opinion on what effect they have on ME..I love this site for the diversity but clarity of opinions..what is good for me may not be for you...i'm not a beauty editor or a sales person,my opinion may not be as valuable as theirs, but on the other hand I'm buying beauty products for more than 10 years,so I truthfully speak about their effectiveness or the lack of it.
this is a good idea

im new to this site and was wondering if anyone could help me out i just need to know how it works if it worked for you and some good ways toget points thanks
i just came here to write reviews and read interesting stuff,i don't know about points and don't care to make an effort to collect them,i'm sorry if i'm no help
Simply think about products you use most to care for yourself--which do you love? Which do you hate? Which are so-so? Then look online to see if they are listed (most likely, they are). State in your own words your opinion and why you feel the way you do (keep in mind that you are influencing other whether they should buy them as well). Honesty is the best policy. Don't worry if someone hates what you truly enjoy; this site is without bias or judgment. Be yourself and enjoy! Welcome and have a wonderful time!
I always write "honest" reviews, and write about how the products meet my expectations. Everyone is different, and that needs to be kept in mind when reading reviews. It may be helpful to read a reviewer's profile so you have a better understanding of the reviewer. I tend to stay away from reviews that are non-descriptive about how the reviewer used the product, the results, and any other relevant information about whether to buy it or not. I do agree, there are certain product reviewers who need to state their skin type and hair, especially for acne, anti-aging, and hair problems such as dryness and frizz.
I am new to writing product reviews. After I use a product I always give my hinest opinion. I do agree with what you suggest. It is a very good idea.
