Ingrown Hair proper removal?

I have an ingrown hair on my leg and I heard its best to leave it alone, however I cant help taking my tweezers and picking it out and plucking it. Although it hurts sometimes, its very hard for me to resist.

Is there any proper way to remove them?

Unfortunately like many other things, the best way is prevention

You're not alone! According to a Total Beauty poll, 61% of women have had ingrown hairs. The best way to treat and prevent ingrown hairs is by exfoliating the area before and after waxing and shaving, says Kerry Nicole, owner of Wax Poetic Salon in Burbank, Calif. Or use a product that thwarts ingrown hairs, like The Art of Shaving Ingrown Hair Night Cream, $40. Also make sure you're using a topnotch razor or at-home waxing kit. Re: Ingrown Hair proper removal?

I confess to prying and plucking them out. Is this harmful?  No problems yet.
