Makeup
A couple of readers with curly hair have been asking this question lately, so I thought it would be a great idea to address it on the community.
"Should I seek out a curly hair specialist when getting my hair cut? Do they know things other stylists don't?"
Editor Sharon is going to dish out the details on this one.
3 RepliesI would recommend setting up a consultation appointment with hairstylists if you don't have a regular stylist. You don't state what you want to have done; so, it's hard to answer your question. But, interview the stylist about your concerns and what that person can do to accomplish your needs.
Long Answer:
I called up a good friend of mine, hairstylist Stephanie Pohl and she says that searching for a hairstylist with a "specialty" is just a con to getting more clients.
"Anybody who is a professional hairstylist should be able to handle curly hair, because they should be able to handle all types of hair texture. Finding a good hairstylist is finding a good hairstylist no matter the texture."
Conclusion: Curly-haired girls, just like any other girl, need to do their research and find a good stylist. If they are a good stylist, they'd know what to do.
Yes, a good hairstylist should be able to deal with curly hair but honestly, I'd look for someone that works with curly hair more or even better: a stylist who has fabulous curls themselves. While at cosmetology school, I had a much easier time working with curly or wavy hair than some other people because I myself have curly/ wavy hair. You just get a much better experience and overall result when working with someone that is very familiar with the particular look wou are going for. I say shop around; get reccomendations from people who hair hair you love and have a consultation with a stylist rather than just jumping in.
