Trying to lose weight

Besides doing exercise, I have heard (and do) drink a lot of water to fill you up.  I put a little lime or lemon juice in icewater, and it's really good.  It makes me feel full and not tempted to eat between meals.

Also, don't keep bad/junk food in your home.  You'll only be tempted.  Keep sliced carrots, celery or fresh broccoli to dip in low fat Ranch Dressing.  Very satisfying, as is eating fruit, especially a pomegranate/

Hope this helps.  Good luck.

My tips..

Carole had some good tips. I'd add these:

-find a workout buddy. it's very important! especially when you're first starting out.

-try a fun activity, try activities you like/think you'd like (yoga, swimming, etc).

-get a cute workout outfit.

-find healthy foods/meals you like.

-give yourself a "cheat day"

-be realisitic about your goals. have a current weight, ideal weight, dream weight.

Need your help girls!

You are on the right road if you are working out.  The suggestion to get an exercise buddy is a good one.  It is so easy to talk yourself out of exercise, but would be harder if someone was counting on you.  If your health is good, I would suggest that you cross train.  Brisk walking (I dont really encourage running, jogging because of the strain on your knees.)  Join an aerobics class or if one is not readily available, get with your friends and start one.  All you need is some music that will make you move.   Get that bike out and ride it.  Go for a hike on the weekends.  Definitely get all the bad foods out of the house.  If you dont live alone and someone else insists on keeping stuff you dont need to eat tell them to hide it, or lock it up.  Go to the grocery store when you have some time and look over the fresh produce.  Dont stock up on things that you dont like.  When you dont eat them and have to finally throw them out you will only feel like you have failed.  You need to purchase things that you feel that you will realistically eat.  You can get bags of strawberries, blueberries and other fruits frozen.  You just remove a serving at a time and use a little artificial sweetner.  Something that is very helpful is FIBER! Go online and check on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber, the amount of fiber you should get daily.  WARNING fiber should be added slowly to the diet.  It can cause some bad tummy problems if you dont take it slow. But fiber is very filling and low fat and I think you will find that it will help you keep the munchies away.  There are some good snack bars that contain fiber, just be sure and check the label for the sugar and fat content. Lastly, nothing beats the power of positive thinking.  Not easy to do all the time, but try to keep those happy thoughts as much as possible.  You can lose that weight!!!!!!!!

Re: I Need Your Help Girls!

I think it's great that you're getting better at working out. Eating habits are habits, so if you're not used to eating healthy it will definitely be a transition. Use this as an opportunity to try different kinds of food and see what you like and don't like. Healthy food can and does taste good. I used to eat a lot more processed food, but once I got in the habit of eating healthy, the junk food tastes bad to me and makes me feel sick. It will take time and dedication, but if you're commited and open to trying new foods you will be on the right track to changing your eating habits in my opinion.

I know the feeling! here are some tips:

It's always during the summer that I eat the most because I have so much time on my hands but I've learned to overcome it with a few simple steps (below). I won't lie and tell you that it's easy, or that you'll never crave something sugary or high in fat, but I really hope that I help.

First off, get rid of junk in your house. It's always easier to not fall into temptation if the temptation isn't there! :D

Two, find good and healthy food to replace the junk you got rid of. Replace all your white breads and whatnot with whole wheat. I assure you, although it tastes different, it's still yummy. I like to have a slightly sweetened strawberry smoothie for dessert instead of something really sugary. It's really easy to forget that sugar is turned straight into fat in your body, so try keep that in mind when you reach for that cookie! If you really must, instead of having white or milk chocolate which are both super fatty, try a piece of dark chocolate; the darker the better.

Next, look for healthy recipes that taste good! There are super easy recipies all over the internet, but I'll give you one to start with (it's my favorite): warm up 1 whole wheat flour tortilla, then add about 1 tbsp of tzatziki (it's a super delicious greek yoghurt sauce that tastes mostly like cucumbers). lay a few pieces of lettuce onto it, and then add some pieces of grilled or roasted chicken. You can get the chicken from places like Costco, or BJs - but remember to stay healthy.

I wish you the best of luck!

Re: I Need Your Help Girls!

Hey! Well your head is definitely in the right place and you seem motivated to get into shape and start living a healthier life.

Food is definitely MY weakness, so I completely understand. As for eating, I think the most important thing is to not deprive yourself of food, limit portion size (try doing 5 smaller meals throughout the day), don't eat late at night, stay away from fried/greasy food, and reward yourself every couple days with something that may not be "as healthy." (I'm addicted to chocolate!) I would also recommend drinking a lot of water - add some lemon for flavor (this helps bloating as well)! Stay away from sodas, alcohol, or other syrupy drinks.

As for excercising - I can tell you that once you start, your body will get used to it and you won't want to stop! I'd begin with some simple cardio exercises such as walking, jogging, or running about 20 minutes 3 times a week. Once your body has built up some stamina, you can increase the intensity to bring up your heart rate. Try adding in some ab work and light weights when you're ready. It's all about the repititions and mixing up your workouts to get the maximum results.

Good luck and I hope this helps :)

Tips

I have a crazy addiction for sugar so I usually don't keep it in the house to tempt myself and that seems to help. I get mad chocolate cravings so I'll keep a plain hersheys chocolate bar in the house and just break off a few pieces at a time. Its not my favorite candy bar so its easier for me to stop after a few pieces. I've just learned I absolutely  can't keep my favorites (m&m's, reeses, chips ahoy, oreos) in the house or i can't stop. I also set a limit on going to Cold Stone only twice a month at the most. lol.

It costs a lot for the precut veggies and dip but I've learned to just buy them then it entices me to snack more healthfully. I keep my fridge stocked with fruits and veggies at all time and lots of whole grains. I also recently tried the Fiber Plus bars and can't believe how good they are for you and how good they taste. I eat one every afternoon and it easily keeps me full until dinnertime, plus my mouth just feels like it ate a candy bar. I also love kashi and fiber plus cereals. They are the only cereals that I can eat at 7 am and stay full until noon on. I also put into my cereal flax seed, some almonds, and two servings of fruit, like strawberrys and bananas. This seems to help keep me full all morning and keep me away from bad snacking.

Keep Healthy Snacks in Sight

I think the important part about eating right is start by buying healthy food. If you cut out buying junk food then it'll save you the trouble of being tempted to eat it. Keep a nice balance of fruits and veggies lying around and when you're hungry, you'll be tempted to eat those instead. Laughing Keep exercising and choosing to eat healthy and the weight will come right off! Best of luck!
