I recently got this question from a Total Beauty reader and thought it would be good to put to a beauty editor to see what advice they could give.
"Are there styles that women with curly hair should avoid?"
3 RepliesWhile there aren't any hairstyles curly girls should completely avoid, there are a few things to consider when you're trying a new look. For example, when your hair is shorter your curls can look a little tighter, so before you go for a shorter cut make sure you either like the look of it with curly hair or are willing to straighten it regularly.
You should also think twice about constantly straightening your hair, since it can cause major damage. Instead, embrace your curls and work wih your stylist to find a look that you love. My best advice would be to find a hairstylist that specializes in curly hair (Ouidad salons and their affiliates are one good example) and talk to them about what you want. They can help you pick a look that will work best with your hair type, face shape and the amount of effort you want to put in.
Since everyone is different, there are no set in stone "rules," it's all about finding the look that's best for you!
Long Answer: Not really. Let me explain. I went to CEO/Founder of Hair Room Service, Michael Duenas who said there aren't specific hairstyles that curly-haired women need to stay away from. If anything he says, "the hardest thing is to get a clean look on a humid day because of the frizz." In that case, he advises it's better to do a hairstyle that's a bit messy and disheveled.
However, there are haircuts that you should stay away from with curly hair. Duenas says, "One of the biggest things you want to avoid is taking shorter layers on top and leaving length throughout gives hair volume on top but flattens out sides, leaving hair looking long and stringy."
When getting a haircut, Duenas advises to think of your hair like a roof on a house. You want to build the foundation strong enough to support the roof. With curly hair, the foundation would be the sides and bottom of the hair. "If you build in fullness in the sides and bottom [of the hair], then it brings fullness to the top of the hair."

There are not really any hairstyles those with curly hair should avoid but there are certain things to look out for when trying different hairstyles. Your hair, regardless of whether it is curly, striahgt, wavy, etc. can pretty muched be worked into pretty much any style. The thing to to take note of is the work however. Those with curly hair for example may want to try a pixie cut but in order to this may have to either straighten their hair regularly (which can cause a lot of damage) or embrace the tigther curl pattern that comes when cutting curly hair short. Just note that when you have curly hair, extra steps must be taken to protect and maintain certain styles. So go ahead and experiment, but I would get a professional involved if doing things that may require hair cutting as curly hair requires a technique that will ensure your curls fall the right way when need be.
