How and when to start a cleanse

I have been reading many articles about the importance of cleansing, and have found profound interest in that matter. I have been researching all over the internet, and reading product reviews. But, it is so difficult for an inexperienced person like me to pick a product and start a cleanse. Especially because you have to alter your diet during the cleanse. I am a little confused as to where to start. So, I was wondering if anybody would have any suggestions about that matter, and how to go about it. I believe that ridding our body of all the toxins we accumulate daily will make a difference in overall health and beauty. But, where do you start when you are no expert in cleansing? I would greatly appreciate it, if you would be willing to share your knowledge with me :) Especially if the cleanse is all natural!

Re: How and when to start a cleanse

Here's an excerpt from an article I found on ivillage.com, about cleansing diets:

"detox diets

Strategy to Steal: Give your body a break. Many women turn to detox diets like the Master Cleanse (which involves subsisting on a “lemonade” drink made of cayenne pepper, water and maple syrup for days) to shed fat fast. These extreme regimes may backfire, though: Dramatically slashing calorie intake for more than a few days can actually send your metabolism into a slump. Why? Your body starts to think it’s starving so it begins to digest protein (your muscles!) so you actually end up burning fewer calories, explains Jennifer Ventrelle, registered dietician and nutrition counselor at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center. "But doing a light diet that contains a lot of liquids (fruit and vegetable juices, unsweetened tea and water) for one day can give your digestive system a break,” she says. The more you eat, the harder your digestive system has to work to digest that food, which can lead to bloating and constipation. But, when you eat lightly, food has a chance to more easily pass through the system, which reduces these symptoms, explains Ventrelle. “It can also have the psychological benefit of making you feel like you have a fresh start, which can encourage you to switch from an unhealthy diet to a healthy one.” To stay safe while doing a one-day light diet, skip anything with caffeine, added sugar and saturated fat. Don’t dip below 1,000 calories. And make sure that in addition to liquids, you’re getting calories from produce and at least one ounce of protein with each light meal, advises Ventrelle."

Below is the link for the full article, which is not all about detox diets but rather about diets in general.

Good advice, Crimson!

I have a friend that is in the hospital right now, and I am sure that part of the reason is that she overdid it with "products" from her "nutritionist".  Please be careful if you buy something that claims it will cleanse your system.  The advice that Crimson posted using fruits, vegetables, and lighter intake to give your system a break sounds like a good plan to me.

Re: Cleanse

People do it or don't. I would not. I'm not big on fads in general. If you take care of your body it'll take care of you.

I would do the above. It docent make sense to me that all this processed food and all the things humans make are what makes us unhealthy but yet they say to take this human made pill to fix what the other human made stuff has done to us.

Don't do it.

The human body doesn't need a "cleanse"--unless you mean "cleanse" as in cutting out junk food, and eating HEALTHY from all of the food groups, and exercising. Frequently, this kind of dieting, which so severely restricts calories, has only short term results, since the dieter gains back weight when they resume eating normally. The best course of action is to make a LONG TERM lifestyle change that involves a balanced diet and physical activity.

Cleanse

I do one in the fall and the spring.

There are so many out there that are natural, you should do one that benefits you. The one I enjoy in the spring is half cup orange juice, one cup cranberry juice, and half teaspoons of ginger, cinamon and nutmeg. Take this and water it down with two quarts of water and drink all morning. Between the antioxidants and anti-inflammatories in these herbs and fruits and the usually increased water intake, I feel that it works. I eat a salad for lunch and chicken or turkey with vegetables for dinner. It is actually yummy too.

I do drink a glass of lemonade with cayenne occassionally but that tastes awful.

I stay away from all pills.

There are many different cleanses....

It really depends on your body type, and what your trying to "cleanse", contrary to popular belief body cleansing is NOT a "trend" or a "fad", it is essential to one's health. It also can be traced back to ancient cilivlizations. I say consultant an herbalist, I do a cleanse about twice a year. Good luck, hope this helps.

Re: How and when to start a cleanse

Consuming large amounts of flax seed without liquid can result in intestinal blockage. Cape aloe leaf is unique due to theproperties of fiber and fuels cramping but calms and cleans like aloe Vera. It acts as a cleansing and detoxifying agent for thedigestive track. It contains more vitamins and minerals, amino acids and polysaccharides than the usual fiber rich lentil. Itreduces constipation problems for all ages.

Fennel is composed of a white or pale green bulb from which closely superimposed stalks are arranged. The stalks are topped with feathery green leaves near which flowers grow and produce fennel seeds. The bulb, stalk, leaves and seeds are all edible. Fennel is a very good source of fiber. Fennel bulb reduces cholesterol levels. It may also be useful in preventing colon cancer since fiber removes carcinogenic toxins from the colon. For adults, fennel seeds or tea can relax the intestines and takes away bloating brought about by digestive disorders. This makes it one of the most effective colon cleanse method commercially.
