Help! How do you do the "smokey eye" look?

Hi everyone! Okay so I'm not a huge make up girl typically. Normally I like to keep it simple with a light eye shadow, mascara, a little blush and some chapstick (lip gloss if I'm really feeling fancy).

So I decided to challenge myself today (with the encouragement of our Facebook fans) and try out the "smokey eye" look.  Like I said, I'm not a big eye makeup gal so I don't think I really put enough on but you've got to start somewhere I figure.

What do you guys think? Any pointers on how I can make it better?  I'm open to trying it this weekend as I'm going to a Halloween themed party and don't mind wearing a little extra makeup.  Thanks in advance!

Smoky Eye

Hi Tracy - GOOD JOB! I think it looks great and the combination of the purples is perfect for the office! I went to the MAC store a while ago to get my makeup done for a formal event and the makeup artist gave me the most amazing smoky eyes. She used one of their seasonal (I believe it was winter palette) that included a matte black, sparkling silver, and more of a nude color.

First, she used the black to cover my entire lid, then in between the lid crease and a little below my brow, blended the black with the silver. She finished by putting the nude color directly under my brow line and blending that in with the silver. It was basically 3 layers: black on bottom, silver in the middle, nude on top. It looked great (well ya - it was professionally done), but now when I want to do a smoky eye, I will mimic what she did on me and it still looks pretty good!

Here are the new MAC Palettes (I absolutely love them) The two on the top right would be perfect for doing a smoky eye like Tracy did! HOLIDAY 2010 Collection :)

Smoky Eye

Hey Tracy,

Not too bad! I think that's a decent smoky eye for work (where you wouldn't want to get too done-up anyway), but for night I'd definitely go a little darker on your lid and blend it up towards your brow bone. Putting a light colored shimmer in the inner corners of your eyes is fun too and will keep the overall look from being too dark. Keep practicing and remember it's just makeup, put it on and if you hate it you can just take it off!
