Desperately trying to go back to natural hair color. Please help!

Hi guys.  So as the subject line implies, yes I am trying to go back to my natural hair color. My hair is naturally a nice very ashy light brown with some blonde tones throughout. About a year ago I had it professionally colored to get it lightened a bit and then six months ago I decided to go dark and went with a warm toned medium brown hair color, again professionally done. About a month ago I decided to quit coloring my hair as it is too expensive and I just wanted my old color back anyways. So I went to the salon to see if I could get it colored back to my original. She bleached it to "lift" the color, of course it turned a more light red color since she lifted the darkness from it. But she assured me she would color it and it would be lighter without the red. It took a couple processes and in the end I was still left with my original color. I then went to a different colorist and he put some highlights throughout to break up the darkness. It helped but still not what I'm looking for. Since then my hair color has lightened quite a bit but it's still not quite what I'm looking for. I understand that it's hard to get exactly the right color but I just want to know if there is any way at home to get rid of red tones? My hair is about the shade i want it,  although it could go slightly lighter, but those stubborn red tones make it look so weird as it's growing out! I've tried purple shampoo and John Frieda's Sheer Blonde Go Blonder helped make it lighter. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas! I'm tired of wasting my money at the salon.
