from Robert24's blog
How do you keep your silver jewelry looking great?
#1
Don’t expose your silver jewelry to air. The most common way in which silver gets tarnished and loses its luster/ value is by being exposed to air. So make sure your jewelry storage case is as air-tight as it can get. Lay your silver in a soft, fabric lined box if you can. This is usually the most sensible way to store your jewelry.
#2
Make sure your polish your jewelry. It might not be weekly, daily, or fortnightly, but somewhere along the line your silver will eventually tarnish. At this point you need to make sure that you polish your silver properly to restore its luster. Clean your jewelry using a silver cloth or soapy warm water. We do not recommend using silver polish or dip.
#3
Keep silver away from Sulfur. The truth is fresh air isn’t actually bad for silver, but it contains sulfur which can cause tarnishing. This is also true for anything else that contains sulfur, from latex, wool, mustard, to onions and eggs.

#4
Don’t put silver under light. Direct sunlight to be specific is bad for silver. To have the best silver jewelry make sure you always remove the jewelry when bathing, showering and swimming and store in a dry, cool area away from strong lighting.
#5
Polish with the right substances. There are a number of solutions that you can use to polish silver. Make sure that you use the one that you understand the best. The most suitable solutions to use include the following.
• Use a mild ammonia and phosphate free soap mixed with warm water. Use microfiber rag to wipe your silver/ rub it.
• Mix baking soda and water to form a paste and rub the paste around the silver before running it through warm water.
• Olive oil and lemon juice can also be used to clean silver. A ratio of 1/2 cup lemon juice to 1 teaspoon olive oil is the perfect mixture.
Conclusion
Silver jewelry tarnishes due to interactions with sulfur molecules in air or sulfur containing items. Because of this the most ideal way to protect silver is by keeping it away from such substances. Also avoid silver jewelry coming into contact with harsh chemicals including perfume, hairspray, bleach and cosmetics. < Previous Post Next Post >
