Spring Cleaning!

Today I began my spring cleaning by tackling the pantry. Currently I am about half-way done, but I have a sick toddler and fiance! It's hard to get too much done at once. I have rid the pantry of anything that was out of date and put it out in the trash. I still have a ton of baby food to sort through. After that, it's mostly down to giving the floor a good scrub, hanging up some items, and organizing the shelves. My daughter is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts so I need to make sure any of those items that have or could contain nuts are placed on the top shelves. Well out of reach of her little hands. She loves going into the pantry to pick out her food though, so I'll be sure to put all of her goodies on the bottom shelf.

This has also been a great time to get rid of appliances that no longer work, or ones that I don't use. Freecycle, anyone? Freecycle is great because some people can use items that I don't need that are still in working condition. It's great to know I'm helping someone, but that I am not tossing everything into the garbage to go to the landfill.

The reason I am doing this is because I cannot clean everything in the apartment. My fiance is still showing signs of the stomach bug--poor guy. I want to wait until his symptoms go away before I bleach everything. We have birds, so I have to shift them from room to room so that they are not near the fumes. I also have to wait for a warm day again. It was quite cold when I went out earlier.

Since we live in an apartment building I had an epiphany lately. I have been wanting to get a compost bin. Last year they put in gardens for the elderly to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. I think it would be great to have a community bin. This could be used to fertilize the gardens and people can feel good about doing something nice for the environment. I hope to talk to the building management about this next week and see what they think. It's not that expensive to build and I wonder if we could get it donated since it will be of use to the gardens.

I recently had to clean my whole kitchen and pantry that I share with three other girls. It was such a task. It took us 5 hours of scrubbing, wiping, washing....it was exhausting.
