Splurge or Scrimp? Part 1 – Skin Care
In a perfect world we would all have unlimited funds and could buy the most expensive and luxurious beauty products known to woman. But since the world can be unfair, most of us have to balance what products to spend on and what products to scrimp on. I approach this in a similar way I approach my wardrobe or my home decor. If you mix in bargain pieces with a couple of expensive pieces, you can create an expensive look when it is all put together. They key is finding the right combination of splurge vs. scrimp to make it all look great!
In Part 1 of my Splurge or Scrimp series, I am focusing on skin care. Why? Because your skin is the foundation for everything else you apply to your face. A “weak” foundation will not support a flawless look. So splurge a bit here and scrimp a bit there and look fabulous all the time!Face Washes
Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple by Philosophy – 16oz $35.00
Just as the name implies, this face wash is pure as it deep cleans pores and eliminates makeup build-up, the meadowfoam seed oil naturally conditions the skin and it is fragrance-free. Purity is known for its 4-in-1 approach to cleanse, tone, melt away makeup and hydrate the skin.
Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash – 5oz $21.00
The face wash is made with natural ingredients and does a great job balancing the dry and oily places on our face. Broad leaf kelp extract discourages excess oil production. Wheat protein protects the dry areas and tourmaline allows dirt and sebum to easily wash from your face down into the drain.
Daytime Moisturizer
Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar – 2oz $42.00
This moisturizer is a lightweight (mousse-like) daily moisturizer that hydrates and provides antioxidant protection while improving skin texture and tone, leaving it smooth and radiant. It contains lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid that helps remove surface dead skin cells, and beta-glucan to promote overall skin health by helping to strengthen skin’s natural rejuvenation potential.
Nighttime Moisturizers
It is true that your skin will be healthier if you use the right moisturizer at the right time of day. At night, your skin is busy repairing itself while you sleep so you need products that will give your natural body process a boost!
Estee Lauder’s Resilience Lift Night – 1.7oz $84.00
While you sleep, this exclusive Nocturnal Lift Complex works with skin’s nightly renewal cycle and gives your skin the additional support it needs for a more intensive nighttime lift. Powered by Sirtuin NL1 Technology, this innovative nighttime formula with K3 Vitamin C helps give skin the critical time it needs to boost its natural production of collagen and elastin. A super-intensive moisture complex helps counteract overnight dehydration which is the main cause of your skin’s breakdown.
Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar Night – 2oz $50.00
This formula boosts nighttime renewal to re-texturize skin as it plumps the appearance of fine lines and evens skin tone. It’s patented qusomes help deliver potent glycolic acid deep into skin’s surface and it is formulated with gradual release technology to minimize the potential for irritation. It is one of my favorite products by far!
The Scrimps
Toner
Apple Cider Vinegar (non-pasturized) diluted with a bit of water – 16oz $2.75
That’s it! So why does ACV work? Malic and lactic acids found in the vinegar
help to soften and exfoliate your skin, reduce red marks, and treat acne. Apple cider vinegar also tones your skin to the proper pH. It’s a wonderful beauty secret hiding in your kitchen cupboard!
Masks
Sea Minerals Black Mud Mask – 3oz – $12.00
This is one of the most natural mud masks that you can get for a great price. Masks should be used about once a week to extract the impurities from the skin and unclog pores.
Boots Botanics Conditioning Clay Mask – 4.2oz $9.00
This mineral rich oceanic clay mask contains a negative electrical charge which acts like a magnet helping to draw deep-rooted impurities out of the skin without drying. Its hydrating and oil absorbing properties leave skin soft, smooth and wonderfully cleansed. I love this product!
Lip Care
eos Lip Balm – .25oz $3.29
This lip balm is not only cute but is also 95% organic, 100% natural, and paraben and petrolatum free. Packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter and jojoba oil, this sphere keeps your lips moist, soft and sensationally smooth.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of my Splurge or Scrimp series that will address makeup primers, foundations and powders. Oh my!

I really want to try some of these products. Skin care is the only area that I splurge on (haircare, makeup, everything else I don't mind being a bit cheap and buying drugstore.)
