THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE TOTAL BEAUTY POINT SYSTEM
Report blog post as inappropriate
I have been on this site for a very long time(since college!) and I completely agree with you. I joined this community because I love learning about products and beauty techniques and sharing tips and opinions with other like-minded ladies. I still remember the first TB article I read(a bunch of hairstyle how-tos) and how impressed I was that it was truly a unique site. The site has gotten SO far away from the quality that it used to have. I understand that things change over time, but all the things that I loved about it have changed. To your point(no pun intended), the points system is a joke. I remember when I hit elite that I was very excited, and I knew that I had put in a LOT of work to get there. I felt like my contributions were full of thought, and I hoped they would give other girls valuable information. Now, it seems like anyone can ascend to elite with minimal effort, which brings down the quality of the community as a whole.

Hi CaroleVonAllten, You can take a look at our point system information page for a detailed look at how points are distributed. There are many factors that come into play when scoring points. This page displays a breakdown of how the number of points can vary by the number of reviews depending on the number of words used in reviews as well as how helpful they were to others. We appreciate your feedback. Here is the ending link for further reference: /community/about-badges

But can't points also be earned by rating someone's review? Finding it "Helpful" or Not Helpful"...I thought you could get five points each time you do that...?

On the contrary, how does one manage to earn only 260,255 points when you've reviewed 1401 products? I have always given my all, my best when I do something. I like to comment on others' opinions after reading them--I have learned so much from the women on this site! Plus, shouldn't we support each other? Some reviewers may do things a little half-hearted in order just to garner points rather than taking the site very seriously.

I write long reviews, much like Volta. I love Volta's reviews because she gives information which I need to know when making a decision on what to purchase. Those who write "Really nice" and vague descriptions make me wonder if they've ever used the products. I think the system is flawed by those who give nebulous reviews which don't provide the information consumers need. I've been writing for beauty sites for fourteen years; the least amount of words any decent site would accept was three hundred. Total Beauty has it correct--you reward those who take the time to thoroughly review, test, and describe products than those who "fluff" them off.

You don't only earn points from reviews.
